“Stephanie not only listened but really heard what I was saying during our sessions. She was very mindful about giving me the space to think things through as I spoke and shared what I needed to process. She was great about pointing things out and reminding me of the progress I was making along the way. I never felt that she was talking "at" me or talking to just fill the space. Our sessions were always helpful. During a very difficult time in my life, I always left the session feeling positive about my next steps. And that had a lot to do with her careful guidance and calm and reassuring manner. She helped me realize that I was a much stronger person than I ever realized. Not sure I would have gotten there without her help. I highly recommend her. ”

“I've been seeing Stephanie Sorensen for psychotherapy for 5+ years and can't recommend her highly enough. When started seeing Dr. Sorensen she was part of a practice that took my insurance, but I stayed with her when she moved on because I find her support and perspectve so valuable to my ability to manage my day-to-day in the midst of multiple challenges impacting my family. One of the things I appreciate most about Dr. Sorensen is her approach - she's an excellent listener (as all therapists should be!) and seems to know just when to come in and offer her thoughts or ask questions to get me to consider things from a different angle. She's also just a warm, down-to-earth person which I've not found to be the case with all therpists (or all humans).”

Getting to know Dr. Stephanie Sorensen

Sorensen Psychotherapy founder, Stephanie Sorensen, PsyD I am a licensed psychologist with a PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University, practicing both in person and via telehealth in New York City's Upper West Side. I specialize in treating adults struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and relationship issues. The heart of my work is relationship: relationship with others and your relationship with yourself. As such, I work with couples who want to strengthen their connection, and I help people navigate identity crises that can arise during major life transitions, including parenthood, divorce, traumatic events, or loss of a loved one. It can be hard to find someone with the experience, passion, and training to help you. I understand how difficult it is to seek help and to open up the good, the bad, and the messiness of your relationship to a stranger. I know the patterns, sticking points, and barriers that arise when couples and individuals confront their relationship difficulties. I also know the relief couples experience when they can finally let go of blame and allow themselves to feel understood-by themselves and by their partner. I've worked with people at all stages of their relationships, from unmarried to long-married, separated, and those deciding whether and how to establish a family. I have treated patients experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, post-traumatic stress, addiction, and major life changes. I have a special interest in women's issues, particularly struggles around fertility, pregnancy, motherhood, and forming blended families.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Opening up to a therapist takes courage. I will take your feelings seriously, be engaged and attentive, and still make space for humor. My approach draws on my extensive training in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Family Systems, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I also employ skills-based work using research-based modes of therapy such as CBT and DBT. I am relationally-oriented and use my relationship with you in session to explore and better understand your experiences with others in the outside world.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the initial 60-minute intake session, we will talk about what brings you to therapy and develop an understanding together of your treatment goals. I will ask questions about your history to get a fuller sense of you, and will share with you my initial impressions and recommendations for treatment. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me questions about myself and my approach. Ongoing treatment with me typically consists of weekly 45-minute or 60-minute sessions for individuals. Couples meet for 60-minute sessions. The length of treatment depends on your needs and goals. Some patients choose to focus on more immediate goals and others benefit from a more open-ended process. Together, we will explore and better understand your barriers to change, help you cope better with stressors, and ultimately, find better ways for you to act, connect, and live a life of meaning and joy.

Dr. Sorensen is truly the best therapist I've ever had and I'm so glad I followed her to her private practice! We've been working together for 2 years and she has helped me be a happier, more productive, and generally better person. With her help, I've gotten to examine my own beliefs about the world and discuss the type of future I want to intentionally build for myself. She is kind, empathetic, wise, and very professional. Couldn't recommend her enough!!
Dr. Sorensen is incredible. My husband and I saw her for almost two years and found her support, guidance, and advice to be incredibly helpful. She is a great listener, thoughtful, and asks the right questions to help you reflect. She’s the best therapist I’ve ever had.
