Getting to know Stephanie Wise

Hi! I'm Stephanie Wise, the therapist behind Sage & Vine Counseling. I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist based in California. I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University of Honolulu. My focus is on relationships-helping clients build skills to find better connections, such as social skills and confidence, as well as working to reconnect with long-term partners with whom they've committed to building a life. Previous clients have described me as warm yet direct; I believe in modeling the clear communication that I feel is essential in all relationships. I've always been a keen collector of love stories and fascinated by the communication (and miscommunication) that holds our relationships together. I'm intrigued by how our individual identities intersect with our roles within larger systems. I believe that building stronger relationships within families leads to stronger individuals and more resilient communities. I'm drawn to this work because I believe the powers of empathy and strong communication start at home and create a better world for all of us. I've been working in mental health for over 10 years and have been a therapist for the past 5 years.

What should a new client know about working with you?

We were taught math, and english, and how to dribble a basketball, but somehow they forgot to tell us how to live happily ever after.. The reality is that most of us need some guidance in relationships every now and again. It's not about how much you love each other it's about how you're loving each other. Once we are past the honeymoon stage we can end up in patterns that leave us feeling unheard and unsupported, attacked and criticized, or alone and disconnected. This can lead to even more difficulty in talking about difficult topics and maintaining intimacy (emotional and physical). Don't wait to get good at bad habits... relationship skills can be learned so you can be committed to more than just being in a relationship, you can be committed to being in a happy relationship. When we are in the middle of the argument we can forget why we even brought up the topic to begin with... We don't end up in arguments because we are trying to argue or be mean to our spouse - we are usually trying to express a feeling or a need, share about our perspective, or get on the same page about the past or future. And yet somehow we end up in these heated moments feeling defensive and attacked. We lose sight of where we meant to be going when we started the conversation. That's where I come in. Whether it's about clearing away the confusion so you can get back to understanding each other or managing the emotional turbulence of unmet needs and vulnerabilities, or learning the practices of happy long term relationships, let therapy be a tool to help you rediscover your joy, build resilience, and practice peace in your love and your life. It’s brave to reach out for help and shows wisdom to seek guidance through growing pains. Relationship skills aren't taught in school and our parents aren't always a reliable resource for the best way to handle conflict. Regardless of what is bringing you in, know that things can get better. Reach out to get started :)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before Therapy: You might be in a relationship feeling nervous or unstable in the face of a major life change (engagement/marriage, growing family, cross-cultural confrontations, grief, etc.) or you might be coming out of a major life event and wanting to strengthen your healthy relationship skills. You might be revisiting the same argument again and again. You might be avoiding conversations and pretending everything is alright but knowing in your gut that things should be easier than this. You might have intimacy issues or feel a lack of connection. You are unsure of how to move forward in the relationship. During Therapy: We manage expectations around relationships and explore family of origin and cultural beliefs. We discuss your ‘why’ thoroughly for being in therapy and explore what ‘success’ would look like for you. We discuss what interventions and approaches you have found helpful before and what you didn't life before (if this is not your first time in therapy. I use evidence based practices (such as family systems, brief solution focused, Gottman and emotion-focused therapy techniques) to support you in exploring your changing identities (as a couple and/or as an individual). We discuss skills to overcome barriers within life transitions. We strengthen communication skills and emphasize the importance of curiosity and lifespan development approach. We check in regularly about goals and progress. After therapy: You are feeling more united, stronger, and more confident in your relationship (or relationship skills) as it grows with the transition. You have the tools to manage conflict as it arises. You are able to hold the growth of both your selves as individuals and your selves as a couple.
