About Dr. Steven Naymagon

Steven Naymagon, MD Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology? I went to medical school wanting to make a difference in people’s lives. As a student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, I was torn between surgery and internal medicine. Surgery would allow me to fix acute problems in real time. Internal medicine would let me work out complex problems and develop long-term relationships with patients. Then I discovered gastroenterology! As a gastroenterologist, I help patients with complex chronic conditions and support them through trying times. I also perform urgent endoscopic procedures to treat bleeding ulcers, remove dangerous polyps, and relieve gastrointestinal blockages. These aspects have led to a fulfilling career and get me excited to meet new patients and solve new problems every day. What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology? While I practice general gastroenterology, I have honed certain skills. Training at Mount Sinai Hospital, where Crohn’s disease was first described, sparked my interest in treating inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis). I learned from world leaders in managing complex Crohn’s and colitis, and these skills remain part of my practice. Since Crohn’s often involves the small intestine, I have spent additional time learning procedures to assess it – capsule endoscopy and double balloon small bowel enteroscopy. This combination of medical and interventional gastroenterology has been a great asset to my patients. Do you have any special honors, recognition, or achievements in your medical career? Being affiliated with a major medical center has allowed me to participate in educating gastroenterology fellows and trainees. I have received the voluntary faculty teaching award from the GI fellowship several times. I was also named consultant of the year by colleagues in the Division of Hospital Medicine.

I visited Dr. Naymagon's office in November for LPR. Without any testing or warning of side effects, he suggested taking Nexium for a prolonged period of time. Once I stopped taking Nexium, my LPR got worse. Furthermore, I found out that I was pregnant at the time of my visit, which makes his choice of not checking or explaining any ramifications of taking Nexium for an extended period of time extremely unprofessional. Please avoid this doctor at all costs.
