Getting to know Dr. Susan Selthofner

Dr. Susan Selthofner, DNP, APNP, PMHNP-BC, is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner working with child/adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients struggling with all mental health and substance use/addiction disorders. Dr. Susan will take the time to listen and assist you in making a plan involving psychotherapy, medication, or both. She worked for 26 years as a nurse providing direct care in emergency, critical care, women’s health, and psychiatry before becoming a board-certified practitioner, and is committed to providing patient and family centered care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to care is deeply patient-centered. I believe that each person’s story, experiences, and goals matter, and I strive to create a space where you feel genuinely heard, understood, and respected. You can expect appointments where I listen carefully, take your concerns seriously, and collaborate with you in developing a treatment plan that aligns with your values and preferences. I view treatment as a partnership — your voice is essential in every decision we make. My style is warm, compassionate, and supportive. I understand that seeking mental health care can feel vulnerable, and I work to create an environment that feels safe and non-judgmental. When appropriate and with your permission, I welcome family involvement and value the important role loved ones can play in the healing process. I also respect each patient’s wishes regarding privacy and the level of family participation they are comfortable with. My goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care that supports your well-being and empowers you on your path toward improved mental health.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer in-person or virtual appointments. In addition to thoughtful medication management, I integrate psychotherapy into our appointments. Medication visits are not just prescription check-ins — they are opportunities to explore patterns, build coping skills, and address underlying emotional and behavioral concerns. I incorporate evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral strategies, supportive therapy, and skills-based interventions to help you gain insight, strengthen resilience, and make meaningful progress. My goal is to ensure our time together supports both symptom relief and long-term emotional wellness.
