Getting to know Dr. Susanna Stephens

Susanna Stephens, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with over 15 years of clinical experience. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University and her B.A. from Vassar College in Psychology and French. She is a graduate of the Adult Psychoanalytic Program at IPTAR and a fellow of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). She also completed a three-year fellowship through the Rita Frankiel Memorial of the Melanie Klein Trust. In addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. Susanna Stephens has presented at conferences and taught through the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Her essays have been published in ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action and DIVISION/Review, among other places.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer a warm and welcoming environment for you to speak about your concerns and difficulties, as well as your aspirations for your life. Initial sessions allow the space for you to get to know how I work, and for me to assess what kind of therapy would benefit you most. From there, we work in collaboration to help you find relief and a greater sense of joy and agency.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We can spend the first four to eight meetings getting to know one another before we commit to working together. During that time, I will assess how I might be of help to you, and you can get a sense of what it is like to be in therapy with me.
