More about Dr. Syed Abbas, MD
Prior to joining The Recovery Village, Dr. Abbas served as the medical director of a multi-campus, comprehensive mental health agency. Earlier in his career, he served as a staff psychiatrist within the State Department of Corrections, giving incarcerated individuals the chance to overcome debilitating mental illnesses.
Known throughout the field for his research, his studies have included the evaluation of medications such as Risperdal® and Adderall®. His retrospective study on neurophysiologic changes in oriental populations living in the West was published in the American Psychological Society’s Journal of Neurophysiology.
Dr. Abbas earned his medical degree from University Maria De Hostos in the Dominican Republic in 1990. He served his residency in Adult Psychiatry at University at Buffalo in New York, and completed a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry from the University of South Florida in 2001. He served as a research fellow in New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital from 1993 to 1996. He is fluent in Spanish.
Committed to advancing the treatment of behavioral disorders, Dr. Abbas is active in several local and national associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
