Getting to know Tanner Zimmerman

With nearly a decade in the mental health field and extensive training across diverse therapeutic approaches, I have developed a unique, integrative style to support people navigating complex issues. I've been a practicing therapist since 2018, initially working in community-based mental health before transitioning to private practice, where I focus on trauma-informed, inclusive care. My approach is grounded in experiential, feminist, and queer theories, along with Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment and systems theories, and narrative therapy, tailored to each client's needs. Additionally, I incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) principles to enhance emotional regulation and resilience. I hold a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a specialized approach to processing trauma and many other struggles, which I use frequently in my practice. I also work with issues related to gender identity, relationships (monogamous, polyamorous, and ethically non-monogamous), self-worth, sexuality, and kink/BDSM, with a focus on queer individuals and those who identify with ?geek? culture. Currently, I'm working towards AASECT certification as a sex therapist and am pursuing credentials as a Certified Financial Therapist. A commitment to continuous learning and social equity underpins my practice, ensuring I stay informed of the best approaches to support my clients in living authentic, empowered lives.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In working with me, clients can expect a warm, genuine, and non-judgmental environment where their full selves are welcome. I bring curiosity, humor, and strong language (as appropriate) into sessions, which allows us to create a space that is both safe and dynamic. I am not afraid to highlight patterns that might be holding you back, but I do so with compassion, knowing that real growth often requires both support and honest reflection. While I come to each session with a general plan based on your goals, I believe my clients know themselves best. I see my role as a guide who helps clients uncover their strengths and clarify their values, rather than a director with a predetermined agenda. My approach is flexible: in most sessions, I follow where you take us, but I can be structured when needed, particularly if we’re working with EMDR or other protocoled methods. I draw from several theories - including experiential, systems, feminist, attachment, and queer theories - to provide a tailored experience. I also bring in focused principles to support emotional regulation and resilience. My goal is to honor your individual story, experiences, and goals, creating a space where you can explore and express without hesitation. I offer a trauma-informed approach to help you process and integrate past experiences safely. As someone who works with a range of topics, from gender identity, relationships, and self-worth to sexuality and kink/BDSM, I provide an inclusive space where people feel respected and supported, particularly those within queer and geek communities. Clients have described my style as compassionate, down-to-earth, and honest. You’ll find that I respect your autonomy while offering guidance rooted in diverse therapeutic approaches and grounded in genuine care for you. Whether you are dealing with trauma, navigating identity, or seeking deeper self-acceptance, I’m here to support you in creating a life aligned with your true values and self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In therapy with me, the process is collaborative, with each session tailored to where you are in your journey. Our work begins by exploring what brought you to therapy and identifying goals that resonate with you—whether that’s managing anxiety, understanding relationship dynamics, addressing trauma, or something else deeply personal. I believe in meeting you where you are, recognizing that healing and growth are not linear processes. In a typical session, you can expect a relaxed and open space where you lead the direction. I come prepared with insights, tools, and therapeutic frameworks, but I follow where you guide us. This might look like a mix of reflection, asking questions to deepen understanding, or introducing a new perspective to clarify your experiences. You’ll find that I incorporate a trauma-informed lens, focusing on how past experiences may inform current patterns and emotions, so we can work to create lasting change. Sessions often involve curiosity and humor - I find both can foster a supportive and humanizing atmosphere. I aim to balance being compassionate and direct, offering honest reflections to help you gain insight. Over time, as we build trust, we’ll look at any unhelpful patterns or areas where you might feel stuck, all while staying grounded in an affirming, judgment-free space. The therapeutic process with me is about honoring who you are and what you need. Each session is a place where you can be real, explore difficult topics, celebrate progress, or process the complexities of life. Whether we’re diving deep into emotions or working on practical skills, my goal is to provide a space where you feel respected, understood, and supported as we work toward the change you want to see.
