Dr. Terry Dornak, PsyD

Psychologist
1603 Orrington Ave, Ste 602, Evanston, IL
I provide telehealth therapy for adults who are struggling with anxiety, trauma, and relationship concerns, particularly when these issues feel longstanding or complex. Many of the clients I work with are high-functioning in their daily lives but feel emotionally overwhelmed, stuck in repeating patterns, or disconnected from themselves or others. My role is to help clients understand how past experiences, attachment patterns, and stress responses continue to shape present-day emotions and relationships. My approach is trauma-informed, collaborative, and grounded in both insight and practical change. I work with clients to strengthen emotional regulation, increase self-understanding, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. Therapy may include exploring relational patterns, addressing the impact of trauma, and building concrete skills to manage anxiety, emotional intensity, or burnout. I draw from a range of evidence-based and depth-oriented approaches, including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based work, always tailoring treatment to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. I value pacing, consent, and safety in the therapeutic process, especially when working with trauma and attachment-related concerns. My goal is to offer a steady, thoughtful space where clients can do meaningful work at a pace that feels manageable, supported, and effective, with an emphasis on sustainable change and improved quality of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me is meant to feel supportive, respectful, and human. I place a strong emphasis on warmth, compassion, and creating a space where clients feel safe to be honest without pressure or judgment. I am attentive to pacing and check in often about what feels helpful, so therapy remains collaborative, grounding, and responsive to your needs as they evolve.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin by clarifying what brings you to therapy and what you’re hoping to change, while also paying attention to pacing and safety. Over time, sessions focus on understanding patterns, strengthening emotional regulation, and addressing current stressors in a way that feels practical and manageable. The process is collaborative and flexible, with regular check-ins to ensure the work remains aligned with your goals.

More information on payments and coverage

We will check your insurance benefits prior to your appointment and will tell you want your benefits are before you start therapy. We file all claims for insurance companies we are in-network with. We are able to file some out of network claims, however, in some circumstances, out-of-network clients will need to self-pay and then get reimbursed by their insurance via a superbill. A credit card is required for your profile, and all copayments and deductibles are then auto charged to your credit card.
