Getting to know Dr. Thomas Cantey

Hello! Thom Cantey here, pleased to meet you. I want to let you know right off the bat that I do this work because in today's world, the best thing I think I can do is help people — in particular, to become the best and most capable versions of themselves. I'm a Board Certified General Adult Psychiatrist, as well as a Board Eligible Consultation/Liaison Psychiatrist, with my medical, postgraduate, and fellowship training at the University of Chicago. My background involves working with a diverse patient populations in dense urban areas — including those who also have non-psychiatric medical issues — but my private practice includes working with people in rural or remote areas as well. While I have training and experience in a variety of psychiatric conditions, I specialize in mood disorders, anxiety disorders, as well conversion and somatic disorders, and managing co-morbid medical issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style with patients is very collaborative — I want to know what you see for yourself! I want to consider heavily both my patients' goals as well as their preferences. I'm decisive, but not paternalistic. You and I will work together to form a trusting relationship, and we can make decisions about your care together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My hope is to create an environment that not only encourages you to share the elements of your history that help us develop a plan for your care, but also one that encourages you to share things that help me get to know you as a person. Your goals, interests, and hopes are as important to me as your medical history. This will give me insight into how to tailor a treatment plan, and to help you have control about the direction of your care. This is true for both medication management and psychotherapy modalities.
