He has a postgraduate degree in hospital administration from Anna University, India and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston where he specialized in tissue engineering and design of medical devices. He helped establish a health center in an underserved rural tribal community in India before completing postdoctoral research fellowships at Harvard Medical school, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Boston. He has extensive expertise in tissue engineering including stem cell research for bone and cartilage regeneration. He held a joint appointment as a clinical research fellow in the hand and upper extremity service at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and was a Research Scientist at New York University in the Division of Spine surgery. His research included spinal cord injuries, clinical outcome studies in the field of orthopedics and spine including FDA device studies. Dr. Cheriyan did his surgical internship at the BronxCare Health, Mt. Sinai Health Systems, New York where he was pleased to be honored as the best intern.
