Dr. Canty specializes in treating patients with back pain, neck pain and other severe pain disorders. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiologists in the area of Pain Management.

Dr. Canty uses the most advanced techniques available to relieve spinal pain such as that caused by arthritis, degenerative discs, and spinal stenosis. He also treats patients with severe chronic pain due to nerve damage, traumatic injuries, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). His practice reflects his strong expertise in the treatment of resistant pain where previous therapies have been unsuccessful.
He completed his Interventional Pain Management fellowship training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to that, he completed his residency in Anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

At Harvard Medical School, Dr. Canty was an instructor in Anesthesiology. He was also an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was recently honored with the Inaugural 2009 Citizenship Award for his contributions to the hospital. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate/New York Medical College.

This was my 2nd appointment with Dr. Canty, the first time I only saw assistants. This appointment was for a back injection. 1. Once they called me in to a room to sit in a chair, there was a curtain with another patient apparently getting dressed. That is very informal. 2. I realized passed this curtain and the women was the OR room was. Shouldn't we change into gowns to keep outside dirty and allergens to a minimum? 3. Once I was now behind this curtain waiting my turn, a young tech came in with gloves and opened the door, he then proceeded to "sterilize" my back without changing gloves! 4. I also noticed that the table they have you lay on was not disinfected and did not have any paper as most hospital beds do to prevent spread of germs or diseases. 5. The doctor only introduced himself once my face was down so I only saw his shoes, how unprofessional. 6. I didn't see the women who injected needle use new gloves either. In a world where we now how diseases such as AIDS/HIV, West Nile, and Hepatitis are spread through blood, why wouldn't they ensure safety and to be as clean as possible. I have seen my dogs Operating Room and it was more sanitary than this place!

First of all, I did not see Dr. Canty. I saw another doctor (or possibly PA/NP; it wasn't clear). Dr. Canty came in afterwards, but only because the doctor/PA seeing me didn't know how to treat me and wanted his opinion. This is fine, but it wasn't made clear to me when I booked my appointment, and I think it should have been. They were not sure how to treat my pain. I was hoping that they would try a nerve block of some sort, since my pain is neurological, but they did not. They prescribed a higher dose of the pain medication I was already taking (gabapentin), even though I told them I had tried to increase my dose and suffered from intolerable side effects when I did (severe vertigo and ringing in my ears, as well as some cognitive delays that are alarming to me as I am only 31). Even though he mentioned other antiseizure medications and antidepressants that have been used to treat neuralgias/neuropathies, Dr. Canty said I had to try again to increase my dose so I left with a paper prescription. I thought that was unusual, since NY requires electronic prescriptions from most doctors. I was discouraged because they told me to come back in "a couple of months" if things didn't improve. I've been dealing with an incredibly painful condition that has taken the better part of a year to diagnose and even begin to treat, and the thought of going another week with this is unbearable - let alone a couple of months. I'm 31 years old and otherwise in perfect health and excellent physical shape. I was looking for a doctor to be on my side to try and help me manage my pain enough to get back to living a relatively normal life. I did not feel like he was empathetic or even really on my side. I didn't run into any trouble with my pharmacy with the paper prescription. However, the prescription was missing the pill quantity so they could not fill it. They told me they called the office three times but never got a response. I called to follow up and left a message with the receptionist, but have yet to hear back, and they have not gotten back to my pharmacy yet either. This does not give me much faith in the practice. I also thought the wait time was absolutely unacceptable. They have a sign in sheet at the front desk, where you write your appointment time (among other things). They double book appointments in 15 minute increments (so, two appointments at 4pm, two more at 4:15). I work at a major hospital and think this is a careless practice that inevitably leads to being tremendously backed up. I waited for over an hour to be brought into an exam room, an additional 30 minutes in the exam room, and then, after being seen for under 10 minutes, waited again in the waiting room for another 10 minutes for my prescription.

Nothing is worse than when a doctor on ZocDoc leaves their entire schedule as available on ZocDoc, only to be left sitting in their waiting room for HOURS. That is what happened today with Dr Tim Canty, who had me waiting for over 90 minutes. It is completely disrespectful when doctors do this.. He seems to be a good doctor, although his office is a bit unsanitary, and the table he had me sit on had no paper on it, and the head rest was deteriorating. I will definitely NOT return to this doctor, nor would I recommend him to anybody. Bottom line: RESPECT your patients' time - and be clean!!!

I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Canty and his staff. From the moment I entered the office I was greeted warmly and received. The ladies at the front desk were very kind and helpful. I have suffered chronic lower back pain for years. This time when my back went out the pain was unbearable. It hurt to walk and even stand and the pain radiated down my left leg and up entire left side, even giving me terrible headaches. On my first visit with Dr. Canty his medical staff was superior. His PA Christine is wonderful and instills great confidence due to her immense knowledge of the body. She examined me thoroughly and knew right where the points of pain were. She explained what the problem was exactly but said I needed an MRI so that they could be sure. I was in terrible pain and my heart sunk when I thought that was all that could be done until the MRI. She then said that until the MRI they could offer me the trigger point injections. I was so grateful I felt like crying from reief just to hear that I could be helped immediately. Christine gave me the injections which did not hurt at all and after a few minutes I was able to stand up and bend over which I hadn't been able to do for about two weeks. I jquickly scheduled my MRI with Lenox Hill radiology where I am going tomorrow afternoon. After they get the results back, Dr. Canty will phone me to schedule my next visit with him. As I said previously I am entirely grateful to the doctor and his kind knowledgeable staff.

dr canty has no control over his office. my appointment was for 1 PM and i did not get seen until 230. you just cannot, CANNOT treat people like that. I'm sorry, but my time matters, i have a job i miss when im held in that office for hours on end. Whos going to make up for the work i need to do? Dr Canty? He needs to learn how to keep his appointments and not run his office like a circus. I have had several epidural injections and while they are not "painful" they are never pleasant experience,however today I never even felt a single injection, not even the lidocaine to numb the area. I kept waiting for the tell tail pinch followed by burn and thought what Dr Canty was doing was just prepping not the actual injection, however, next thing I knew he said he was done, still can't believe it. He must have magic hands, I never felt a single injection and usually I will have about 2-3 lidocaine pinches per area. Dr Canty was also very kind, great pt interaction. I am hopeful I will have better outcome working with Dr. Canty.

Dr. Canty is always willing to listen to and address your concerns. I have been a patient for a few years now and would not go to anyone else.
