Getting to know Timothy Lafolette

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Master's in Nursing from Oregon Health & Science University, my mission is to offer comprehensive care to individuals grappling with mental health symptoms and emotional challenges. With a solid foundation in nursing and specialized training in psychiatric mental health, I employ a holistic, client-centered approach. Expertise in medication management, therapy, and coaching allows me to conduct thorough assessments and craft tailored treatment plans. I prioritize building a therapeutic alliance founded on trust and open communication, empowering clients to actively engage in their mental health journey. By integrating evidence-based practices, I aim to optimize treatment outcomes and foster lasting positive change. Actively staying abreast of advancements in psychiatric nursing, I am committed to ethical standards and ongoing professional development. I am eager to contribute my skills to your healthcare team, working collaboratively to destigmatize mental health issues and provide effective, integrated, and person-centered care. Together, we can create a healing environment that promotes resilience and overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In the initial visit, I will ask a variety of questions in order to get a baseline understanding of your physical health, mental health symptoms, social/family history, medication and supplement history, as well as spiritual/religious preferences. I will also ask about potential safety risks, as well as about any possible use of non-prescribed substances (including caffeine, alcohol, and cannabis) as I seek to know about the many factors in your life that could be increasing or decreasing symptoms. As we work together, I will continue to assess a variety of aspects of your life, and we'll collaborate to find the best path on your journey to mental and emotional wellness. We will discuss potential medication options, and can consider over-the-counter supplements that have evidence for helping to foster physical and mental health. We will also discuss and consider a variety of non-medication treatment options through talk therapy, as well as discussing how to bring these habits into your daily life in a manageable and sustainable way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial assessment will be used primarily to get to know you, your health, and your life circumstances, and we will start to develop a plan of action and areas that you would like to work on. After that initial visit, subsequent visits will entail a brief reassessment of symptoms, effectiveness and side effects of medications or supplements (if any), discussion of potential adjustments of medications or supplements (if needed or desired), and then we will also work on discussing via talk therapy areas that you would like to explore. I will provide a combination of gentle guidance through questions that will help you towards self-discovery and problem-solving, and I will likely also provide some directive approaches, recommending different possible actions or areas of exploration to be considered between sessions. You may request more of one approach than the other, and I will adjust to your preferences. For instance, if you want primarily listening, reflecting, and questions, I can focus on that approach most of the time, with rare offerings of suggestions. If you want more direction or suggestions, I can provide a variety of different options for exercises or tasks that we can work on in the therapy session or for you to work on between sessions. I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing techniques, but I also have a basic certification in Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping) as an additional supplemental tool that we can use during the session, and can be used between sessions as well.
