Marriage and Family Therapist

Therapy is a deeply personal experience, a safe space where you can face your deepest fears and confront marital challenges. However, none of this is possible without confidence in your therapist. If you are unsure about whom to work with, I hope the following will ease your mind. With 16 years of experience as a therapist and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from California Baptist University, I have encountered the full spectrum of human struggles. I have helped couples who seemed beyond hope rediscover their love. I have guided individuals through the aftermath of mass shootings, the loss of loved ones, and the depths of depression and anxiety, helping them find the light. I often tell my clients, "If you say something that shocks me, I will be shocked." Throughout my career, I have never turned away a client, diagnosis, or couple, regardless of the difficulty of their situation. If you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing has worked, let me assure you—there is a new sheriff in town.

What should a new client know about working with you?

What is important to know about working with me is that I am very pragmatic. My approach is tailored to what works best for you. My clients often experience different sides of me based on their needs. Some prefer a straight shooter who doesn't sugarcoat things, while others benefit from a gentler touch, with a spoonful of sugar to make the process more palatable. Learning what approach each client needs is one of the most important first steps I take to ensure our success together. I strive to make our sessions progress towards your goals, be insightful and educational, and as enjoyable as appropriate. That's right—therapy can be fun.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What you can expect from me as a therapist depends on what we are working on. In marriage counseling, I often take the role of a referee. I'll call out unhealthy communication styles during sessions, but I am not there to take sides. My goal is to help both partners express themselves clearly, and I will intervene to facilitate better understanding if I see miscommunication. I take a hands-on approach, teaching tools and techniques, and we often practice them in session to ensure you have a working knowledge to use outside of therapy. One of the most helpful things I do is to help couples start seeing themselves as being on the same team. While I don't take sides, I am firmly on the side of the marriage and its health. Individual therapy with me will be a very different experience. I believe that many of the emotional and relational difficulties we experience stem from unresolved emotions. I utilize EMDR Therapy to root out and heal these unresolved emotional difficulties. I don't use the word "heal" lightly. This process is not about coping with issues but fully resolving them so they no longer plague you. These unresolved emotions can cause feelings of overwhelm, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and a host of other problems. Together, we will chip away at these problems until we achieve what I like to call "a total emotional makeover."
