Dr. Waqas Hanif, MD

Cardiologist
1200 Rte 300, Newburgh, NY
What made you want to become a health care provider or what is your earliest memory of wanting to be one? My interest in medicine began in fifth grade, inspired by my cousin who worked as a doctor. She often shared stories from the ER, and the deep sense of fulfillment she felt after helping patients left a lasting impression on me. What do you love most about your specialty? / Why did you choose your specialty? I am drawn to interventional cardiology because of the immediate and life-saving impact of the procedures. The gratification that comes from opening a blocked artery in a STEMI patient and instantly restoring blood flow in the cath lab is a truly dramatic and rewarding experience. How do you connect with your patients? Patient-centered care is at the core of my practice. I make a conscious effort to connect with patients by sitting with them and listening attentively to their concerns. In my high-risk, procedure-based field, I always take the time to explain procedures thoroughly, using simple language, visual models, and video, to ensure they fully understand the risks and benefits. What are your interests outside of the office (hobbies, activities)? I enjoy traveling and have a deep love for science fiction. What is your advice for your patients? The best way to protect your heart is by maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking.

I arrived for my 9:30 appointment at 8:53 went to the second floor and waited outside suite 202 for over an hour. I noticed patients who arrived after me were being called. I returned downstairs to the check-in area for help. After trying to reach someone upstairs for several minutes the receptionist finally got a hold of someone who advised that the doctor was delayed at the hospital and they had no ETA for him. Someone could have come out and talked to me and instead they chose to leave a new cardiology patient waiting in perpetuity. I left feeling upset that I would not see a doctor for the heart attack symptoms I have been experiencing lately. I left fighting to calm myself down while my chest tightened once again and the stiffness in my neck returned. Now I need to try and find another cardiologist and pray they have availability and are reliable. Maybe I should just go to the emergency room.
