Getting to know Dr. Werner Achatz

I am a licensed Psychologist and Psychoanalyst in Private Practice in New York City, specializing in individual and couples therapy since 2002. I earned my PhD and Master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University. I focus on helping you improve and enhance self-understanding, learn how to make better decisions, and live a happier, more satisfying life with stronger self-determination, autonomy, and a greater sense of freedom. My approach is client-centered, solution-focused, and psychodynamic. Areas of expertise include anxiety, isolation and loneliness, trauma, low self-esteem, gay, lesbian, and transgender issues, creative blocks, identity issues, separation, loss and grief, coming of age concerns, relationship conflicts, and issues of intimacy and infidelity. In addition to my Private Practice, I am an Assistant Professor at Columbia University and Staff Psychologist at Columbia University Medical Center, where I see patients for individual and group psychotherapy. I also provide supervisory services to clinicians in training at NYPH Columbia University Medical Center. Prior to working at NYPH Columbia University Medical Center, I was a Staff Psychologist at the Center for Intensive Treatment of Personality Disorders (C.I.T.P.D.) at Mount Sinai Hospital, formerly known as St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital.
