Getting to know Dr. William Decker
I work with adults and adolescents in individual therapy but couples often consult with me - especially regarding family health issues. In addition, I work specifically with couples that are changing and improving their relationship challenges. My treatments focused upon mutual understanding, respect, and trust. Initially, I work by listening and working actively with the patient/s to gain a deeper understanding of the tapestry of their lives. Often the impact of earlier life experiences, as well as repeated patterns of behavior may underlie or shape symptoms. My specialty areas include health and behavioral medicine interventions, stress management, anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, marital challenges, career/work concerns, and grief and loss.
Dr. Decker received his undergraduate degree from California State University at San Diego in Psychology. He moved to the University of Connecticut to complete his Ph.D., specializing in Community (social and clinical) Psychology. Then he accepted his first post-Ph.D. academic position as an assistant professor of Community Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. Next, he joined the University of Maryland graduate faculty at the College Park Campus training Allied Health Professionals: nurses, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and educators in adopting Behavioral Interventions for managing disease and self-management skills to their patients.
Dr.Decker has enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP) in his Old Town Alexandria and Falls Church private practice for over two decades. He immensely enjoys his two grown children and his four grandchildren; yet, his passion remains mentoring and sharing his health and wellness perspectives with those in his community who cherish growing together.

First of all, for some, drumming up the courage to see a therapist/psychologist is hard. What is even harder is being let down by that provider to a degree that is not only unprofessional, but also unacceptable.
When I arrived for my first scheduled appointment, Dr. Decker seemed confused and was definitely not expecting me. I let that slide and continued with the appointment and opened up about very personal, difficult things. He had a good bedside manner and I felt like I could develop a relationship with him and see him for my issues. We scheduled a follow up session the following week at the same time. Not only did he not show up for that appointment, the person at the front desk had no idea of his whereabouts, he did not call, text, or answer his phone when I called. Almost 24 hours later, he called to let me know "his train ran late." Why wouldn't he have been able to call? This is unacceptable.
The worst part of it all is that I continue to receive bills from this provider with a phone number that does not work, addressed to a wrong address (he had my correct address initially), and with an incorrect mailing address. I physically went to the facility that I initially saw him in and they informed me that no one of that name or company worked there and that this must be a mistake. They pointed out that this letter/bill was post-marked in South Carolina and that perhaps it was fraudulent. I have no way of reaching this doctor, but never want to hear from him again after the disappointing experience I had.

Because I arrived early and the receptionist was not there I had to wait but PROMPTLY at the appointed time the doctor called me in his office.

This Doctor phycologist is the first one I have ever been to that gave me hope and made me feel like I mattered. He greeted me with a smile a warm handshake and the kind of consideration we deserve and never really receive.
