William G. Schaeffer, M.D., a practicing interventional radiologist, earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania and completed a Fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the University of New Mexico. He spent many years as Chief of the University of New Mexico Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and Radiological Sciences and served as Vice Chair for Quality and Safety for the Department of Radiology. Dr. Schaeffer is now excited to bring his expertise to Alaskan communities as our lead specialist and Medical Director. He has held leadership roles within the University Medical Center, including the Lobo Wings Executive Steering Committee, the Hospital Quality and Safety Committee, and the Sandoval Regional Medical Center Medical Executive Committee. As a founding member of the Association of Chiefs of Interventional Radiology, he developed the existing model of interventional radiology at the University and successfully established new Interventional Radiology programs at Sandoval Regional Medical Center in 2014 and the University of New Mexico Cancer Center in 2019. He remains board certified in Internal Medicine and holds the IR/DR certification. Dr. Schaeffer has a particular passion for Native American healthcare and has worked to reduce disparities in care for indigenous peoples across the state. Previously, he was the Hospital Director at Lovelace Medical Center, where he successfully developed and led their Hospitalist Division.
