Getting to know Dr. William Yu

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my profile. I know that finding the right psychiatrist can feel difficult. Many people have experienced care that feels rushed, impersonal, or overly focused on medication. I take a different approach—one that values connection, trust, and time. I take the time to truly get to know you—your history, challenges, and goals—so we can create a plan that fits you. I see treatment as a partnership built on trust and open communication. When medication is part of care, I ensure it is truly necessary, carefully chosen, and appropriately dosed. I play an active role in helping my patients build therapeutic skills, strengthen coping strategies, and gain meaningful insight into their experiences—key foundations for lasting growth and well-being beyond medication alone. I am a dual board-certified adult and child/adolescent psychiatrist based in New York City. My training and experience allow me to work comfortably with adults, children and teens across a wide range of mental health conditions, using evidence-based and compassionate approaches. With more than a decade of outpatient experience providing both psychotherapy and medication management, I have also served as the medical director of a Manhattan psychiatric practice, where I supervised other clinicians. Additionally, I have led psychiatric teams in inpatient hospital and day treatment settings and worked extensively in emergency psychiatry and consultation-liaison services on medical units. These varied roles have given me deep expertise in understanding and treating the full spectrum of psychiatric conditions and levels of care. If you’re looking for a psychiatrist who listens, collaborates, and tailors treatment to your individual needs, I look forward to meeting you and working together toward meaningful, lasting change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Seeing patients from school-age to the golden years, I possess a unique appreciation of the developmental stages throughout the entire lifespan, allowing me to provide a Balanced Perspective toward treatment. One's past, present, and future all come together holistically into what makes every person unique. Please note, my practice is cash only at this time. Payments are made via credit card. I do not accept insurance but, if you have insurance, I can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. The Initial Consultation fee for adults is $300 for 60 minute sessions, and for children/adolescents is $350 for 90 minutes. Follow-up visits are $200 for 30 minute sessions and $250 for 45 minute sessions. Accepting new patients in NY and NJ for both medication management and therapy. Please note I do not prescribe controlled medications for NJ. If for any reason during the initial consultation, it is determined that the treatment needs are outside the scope of my care, I will provide referrals and you will not be charged for the visit.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My treatment approach is focused on communication through active listening, connection through collaboration, and evidenced-based treatment. I am committed to understanding every patient's needs as a human being, with individual hopes, dreams and uncertainties, who deserves professional care based on respect, empathy, and attention to detail; without feeling rushed for time. Please read carefully the list of conditions that I treat to ensure that the first visit is appropriate to meet your needs. Please note, my practice is cash only at this time. I do not accept insurance but, if you have insurance, I can provide you with a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. Please check with your insurance to ensure they accept out-of-network. Visits are primarily virtual at this time. Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will receive an email with a link to the virtual visit. Dr Yu is a caring, compassionate physician who meets you where you are in your personal journey to a more meaningful, fullfilled life. He is thoughtful, scientific and his depth and breath of clinical experience is on display in his diagnoses and identification of best treatment options to meet your goals. His unique patient centric approach is unrushed as he gives his time and attention to understand his patients needs that builds trust and confidence. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Yu is the best doctor I’ve ever had. From our first consultation he has been thorough and considerate, and I have felt supported at every stage of my treatment. What really stands out is that he makes you feel empowered in your own journey, and always has some wisdom to share which makes our conversations not only therapeutic, but enjoyable too. I really can’t recommend him enough.
I had a great experience working with Dr. Yu. He was punctual, pleasant, and professional. I enjoyed my sessions with him, because through them I was able to identify and label issues that I've had, but also was supplied the tools to work towards improving them. I definitely recommend his services!
I had a great experience working with Dr. Yu. He was always on time and always pleasant. He was very thoughtful and melodical during our sessions. After working with him, I've been able to finally properly identify and label issues that I have, but also have been given the tools to work through them. 10/10 would recommend.
Dr Yu takes his time to understand your issues before he formulates the right medication and therapy. He has great bedside manners. He has a calming presence which really helps you open up to him

I was a patient of Dr. Yu for many years, and I cannot recommend him highly enough. My circumstances changed, forcing me to find a new provider (which was neither my nor Dr. Yu's decision), and it has only made me appreciate the level of care I received from him even more. Dr. Yu is an incredibly caring and compassionate psychiatrist. What always stood out to me was his ability to see the "big picture." He never just focused on one symptom; he truly took a holistic approach to my well-being, looking at all the connected parts of my life. He was brilliant at integrating adjunctive methods alongside standard treatment, creating a balanced and comprehensive care plan that felt tailored specifically to me. He is a wonderful listener and a truly exceptional doctor. I am incredibly grateful for the years I was under his care.
