Yaning Sun, APRN, PMHNP

Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
421 Hill St, Reno, NV
What drew me to psychiatric nursing was my own journey through suffering and healing, which sparked a deep motivation to help others find hope and recovery. As someone who grew up in China and immigrated to the U.S., I carry a strong sense of empathy shaped by reflection on my personal and cultural experiences. I initially aspired to become a lawyer to protect the vulnerable through justice, but I came to see psychiatric care as a more intimate and transformative way to help people heal. I view nursing as both a form of care and a form of advocacy—being present with patients in their most vulnerable moments while also challenging systems that overlook or harm them. To me, nursing is not about fixing people, but about walking alongside them—bearing witness to their pain, fostering understanding, and nurturing the inner work that leads to true healing. I find joy and meaning in listening to people’s stories and honoring the depth of their human experience. I view my patients as whole, complex individuals shaped by their histories, cultures, and inner emotional worlds. I approach each person with empathy, curiosity, and a deep respect for their lived experience. I assume that all human beings carry pain, longing, and resilience—and that healing comes not from quick fixes, but from being truly seen, heard, and valued. I believe people are not problems to be solved, but stories to be held with care and compassion. I define health and healing in mental health care as a process of reclaiming one's sense of self, meaning, and emotional connection. Healing is not the absence of symptoms, but the presence of self-understanding, inner peace, and the ability to move through life with awareness and authenticity. I see it as an unfolding journey, where people grow not despite their pain, but through it. True mental health care fosters a safe space for exploration, where individuals can reconnect with their inner voice and rebuild trust in themselves and others.
