Getting to know Dr. Zarghoona Ullah

I am the founder of Mental Health Associates San Antonio, an institution dedicated to providing compassionate, comprehensive, and timely mental health care services to both adults and children. I earned my Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Aga Khan University Medical College. I completed my internship, residency, and fellowship in Psychiatry at UT Health San Antonio, specializing in Adult Psychiatry and further completing a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the same institution. With vast experience in managing a wide range of mental health issues, I am deeply committed to helping my patients lead fulfilling and balanced lives. Outside of work, tennis has been my passion, whether I'm on the court rallying with friends or watching the pros in action. I find balance in life by regularly going to the gym to stay healthy and strong. Additionally, traveling allows me to explore new places, experience different cultures, and create lasting memories.

What should a new client know about working with you?

It's important for a new client to have a clear understanding of the therapeutic process and what to expect when working with me as their psychiatrist. 1. Confidentiality: Understand the principles of confidentiality. Psychiatric sessions are private, and information shared during sessions is generally kept confidential. However, there are legal and ethical exceptions, such as if there's a risk of harm to yourself or others. 2. Collaborative Relationship: Therapy is a collaborative process. It's not about the psychiatrist telling you what to do; instead, it's a partnership where you work together to explore and understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. 3. Goal Setting: Discuss your goals and expectations for treatment. What do you hope to achieve? Whether it's managing symptoms, improving relationships, or personal growth, clarifying your goals can guide the therapeutic process. 4. Medication Management and Consent: If your psychiatrist prescribes medication, they will discuss its purpose, potential side effects, and how it fits into your overall treatment plan. Be open about any concerns or questions you have about medication. 5. Payment: We are not contracted with insurance companies. We are an out of network practice. Payment is due at the time of service. If you wish to seek reimbursement from your insurance, we can provide a detailed billing statement upon request. The reimbursement eligibility is subject to your specific insurance agreements. However, your insurance might still cover it through your out-of-network benefits except Medicare. Please inquire of your insurance company for your specific out-of-network benefits.

I had several confirmations from the ZocDoc, and I called several times and left voicemails. It was scheduled as a telehealth appointment. I waited for over 45 min before I actually had to call ZocDoc to help contacting them and it went to voicemail every time. I received a message from that provider many hours later stating they had me as an in person appointment ( which if they looked at my address- I’m over 4 hours away from them) I would have expected a call before my appointment or soon thereafter. So I finally had to reschedule with another telehealth provider. Very disappointed in the communication. Especially since they require a 5 day advance notice for medication. So now I’m having to hopefully get it addressed with another new provider. ZocDoc people were very helpful though.

Dr Ullah was amazing. She exceeded my expectations. She is knowledgeable and a great listener. I was coming from another provider that just seemed to diagnose me quickly and prescribe me lots of meds without really trying to find the root of the problem. Dr Ullah did not do that and in fact took me off of several meds that were ineffective.

This was my first session with Dr. Zarghoona Ullah and I left completely blown away. This wasn't just an in and out appointment, she really cared to go over my history from childhood in order to form her diagnosis and treatment. She identified traits and causes that had gone completely overlooked with my past psychiatrist. Additionally, she explained those things to me with clarity and detail. She's just the best and I am looking forward to continuing to work with her!

Dr. Ullah is prompt, thorough, pleasant, and easy-going but firm. She actively listens and communicates her assessment of your situation and how best to approach treatment. Professional but kind and compassionate. I feel better already. Definitely recommend. Thanks!

She listened, asked questions, and discussed the treatment plan and explained her reasoning on our path forward. What I liked most was the way she listened and the compassion in her expression. Knowledgeable and efficient. Highly recommend. Thanks

Fantastic help and great listener. I felt safe. Heard. And understood. Ullah is the one you can really get to understand your diagnosis with. She walked me through some difficult conversations and really truly made me feel like I was speaking with a medical professional who deeply cared for my well-being. I’m looking forward to my quality of life improving. Thank you very much. Kindly, Joshua

Dr. Ullah is by far the most compassionate and caring psychiatrist there is, hands down. She truly wants her patients to feel relief. I know this because she gave me back hope today that I had lost. I have been feeling so down, medically gaslit by other "professionals," but she validated my pain, my illnesses and actually listened and helped me. Just talking with her, I felt I was in a very safe space and I am so grateful for her extensive knowledge. I would never put quotes around the word professional regarding her because she is truly a professional. She will make sure you get what you need to function and to feel human again. With her help, I know she is saving my life. My kids will have their mom back, my husband will get his bubbly wife back one day soon enough. I feel so much hope. Thank you Dr. Ullah. I highly recommend 10/10.

I have seen 3 providers in my lifetime, and none of them compare to Dr. Ullah. She is so caring and attentive and willing to listen to everything I needed to discuss. I loved my visit so much and am glad I established care with her.
Scheduling was a breeze and Dr. Ullah was very responsive after she received the appointment request. She is very comforting and understanding and I truly felt like my concerns were heard. I walked out with my heart feeling lighter and relieved. I am so glad I found a psychiatrist who is truly invested in my mental wellbeing.
Dr Ullah was very empathetic and professional in her consultation. I was struggling with some major adjustment issues and she really helped me feel better.
I wouldn't go back ever. one ear and out the other. I was clear as day what I went through and what track I was on. right away instead of continuing the regiment I was on they decided to only prescribe me with a mood stabilizer. they had their own theory and not be able to refill any of the other medication which is a red flag. I don't have time to experiment with an anti psychotic with a stranger who barely knows you cause they have a hunch. I was already tested out on this before. I would rather seek someone else, I know I will never be compatible with her.
