Physical therapy is versatile in its scope and can help people of all ages treat various health problems. A physical therapist (PT) evaluates and treats musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, or integumentary systems—your bones, nerves, brain, heart, lungs, and skin.

Educational requirements for physical therapists

To legally practice in the United States, physical therapists must fulfill two requirements: Earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from a program officially authorized by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education and pass a state licensing exam.

Licensed physical therapists often enroll in a clinical residency or clinical fellowship program to gain more knowledge and experience. Residencies allow physical therapists to gain experience in a defined practice area, while clinical fellowships help clinically focused physical therapists sharpen their understanding of the chosen focus areas. Usual focus areas include oncology, geriatrics, sports, pulmonology, orthopedics, and pediatrics.

What is the role of physical therapists?

Physical therapists collaborate with doctors, surgeons, nurses, sports coaches, social workers, educators, nurses, and physical therapy assistants in various healthcare settings. They discuss a patient's concerns and observe the patient walk, stand, and perform various physical tasks. It helps with a proper diagnosis. They can design a customized care plan based on their observation, medical expertise, available medical research, and the patient's goals and expectations.

Physical therapists also evaluate patients' responses and progress to the care plan and make modifications when required. They ensure the treatment plan is implemented correctly for optimal health outcomes.

Regular physical therapy sessions help therapists identify weak areas in your body that may be prone to bodily injury. Accordingly, they can recommend lifestyle adjustments, healthcare routines, and regular screenings to strengthen weak areas and prevent damage.

Types of physical therapy treatments

A physical therapist near you may use a variety of treatments to help improve movement, reduce pain, and restore function. These treatments are designed to support recovery and enhance overall well-being.

  • Exercises and stretches

Building strength, improving balance, and increasing flexibility are key goals of physical therapy. Guided exercises and stretches help activate muscles, enhance coordination, and promote better movement.

  • Massage therapy

Physical therapists use gentle rubbing and kneading techniques to relieve muscle tension and ease discomfort. Unlike traditional massages, these methods target specific areas to promote healing.

  • Manual therapy

This hands-on approach involves a therapist using specific movements and pressure to help improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and support recovery from injuries.

  • Cold therapy

For injuries like ankle sprains, ice packs or other cold treatments may be recommended to reduce swelling, numb pain, and speed up healing.

  • Hydrotherapy

Exercising in water can be beneficial for those recovering from injuries or surgery. Water reduces strain on joints, making movement safer and more comfortable.

  • Ultrasound therapy

Beyond diagnostic imaging, ultrasound is also used in physical therapy to treat muscle and soft tissue injuries. It improves blood flow and reduces inflammation, resulting in speedier healing.

  • Electrical stimulation (TENS)

The physical therapist near you might use transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), which uses low-voltage electrical pulses to promote muscular activity and reduce discomfort. It is often used for chronic pain management.

Physical therapist vs chiropractor: What is the difference?

Although physical therapy and chiropractic care may share a few similarities, their treatment approaches dramatically differ. Here are the key differences:

  • The primary goal of physical therapy is pain-free physical movement. In contrast, spinal alignment and pain relief are the primary goals of chiropractic care.
  • Physical therapy focuses on body movement and functions, including muscles and joints. In contrast, chiropractic care focuses mainly on issues related to hand or leg joint pain, back pain, neck pain, and headache.
  • The physical therapy treatment plan includes stretches, exercises, and nutrition to improve physical health, muscle function, and mobility. In contrast, chiropractic care involves spinal or joint manipulations and chiropractic adjustments to improve the range of motion of the particular joint and faster healing of the discomfort.
  • Physical therapists can work with patients at home or in any healthcare environment. In contrast, chiropractors need specialized equipment and spaces to perform manipulations and adjustments.

What are the benefits of physical therapy?

It is not necessary to undergo physical therapy only when you have an injury or ailment; you may opt for it if you seek to prevent any potential problems. The benefits of physical therapy depend on the reason for treatment. Your physical therapist will advise you on suggested specific procedures, techniques, and exercises based on your medical history and educate you on their individual and collective benefits.

Physical therapy may help you manage pain as well as reduce the need for opioids. Physical therapy can help avoid surgery and treat your ailment simultaneously. Suppose you suffer from an injury. In that case, physical therapy can aid you in recovering from injury or trauma and improve balance, mobility, and movement. Physical therapy can facilitate speedy and healthy recovery if you have suffered a stroke or are experiencing mobility issues. It can help you manage age-related medical problems, too.

Physical therapy can also help prevent falls. It also helps athletes maximize their performance by strengthening specific body parts and using muscles differently and efficiently.

Potential drawbacks of physical therapy

Physical therapy offers many benefits but has some challenges and risks; understanding these drawbacks can help you decide before starting treatment with a physical therapist near you.

  • Cost concerns

Even with insurance coverage, physical therapy can be expensive. Co-pays, session fees, and additional out-of-pocket expenses can increase over time, and for those without insurance, the cost may become a financial burden.

  • Slow or limited results

Physical therapy does not provide instant relief. It often takes weeks or even months to see noticeable improvement. Some individuals progress more slowly than others; in some cases, therapy may not achieve the desired results.

  • Risk of injury

Although physical therapists are trained to ensure safety, there is still a risk of injury. Overexertion or performing exercises with the wrong posture can affect an existing condition or lead to new injuries. Additionally, certain movements, such as stretching a joint beyond its limit, may cause muscle tears or damage.

Who is a sports physical therapist?

Sports physical therapy, or sports physiotherapy, focuses on the treatment and preventative care for professional athletes and individuals who play sports or are physically active. It specifically caters to people who have sustained a sports injury or are facing mobility, flexibility, etc., issues caused by physically strenuous activity.

According to the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy, the scope of practice of sports physical therapists can be divided into six competency areas:

Rehabilitation and treatment: Evaluating athletes' physical and psychological status, informing them of the available treatment plans or therapy best suited for their ailment, and planning intervention programs to minimize the risk of injuries for athletes.

Management of acute injuries and illness: Identifying injuries that require immediate medical intervention, managing such ailments, and providing emergency care.

Medical and surgical considerations: Assessing how closely athletes have adhered to their recovery plans and evaluating their responses to cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, dermatological, and endocrine diseases.

Sports performance enhancement involves evaluating athletes' performance, developing and implementing rehabilitation programs, establishing performance-based timelines for recovery, and counseling athletes on best practices to improve health and performance.

Injury prevention: Designing sport-specific training programs, conducting in and off-season conditioning programs for athletes, and planning and administering physical examinations to screen athletes.

A sports physical therapist can help you overcome injuries, improve and refocus on your areas of strength, develop healthy habits, and work toward achieving your wellness goals.

How to prepare for your visit to a physical therapist?

To make the most of your appointment with a physical therapist near you, note your symptoms and concerns before the appointment. If you underwent tests and body assessments, carry the results with you. Doing so will help the specialist better understand your condition.

Your physical therapist will also require your current or previous medicine prescriptions. List all prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements to share with your physical therapist. You can also mention any genetic or hereditary medical conditions. You may also list health issues related to your parents' or siblings'.

It is wise to note any critical personal information you believe might have contributed to your condition. It may include any recent stressful events, injuries, or environmental factors. These details help your physical therapist diagnose the leading cause of your issue and prescribe complementary or new treatment.

Lastly, remember to wear something comfortable for your first physical therapy appointment. You may contact the specialist to find out if you should wear or bring a specific type of clothing.
