Getting to know Dr. Alexander Seife

Welcome. If you’re here, I imagine you may be feeling stuck or uncertain about how to move forward in your life. I would like to help you take the next steps. In our work together, we will find ways for you to more meaningfully connect with yourself and with those who are important to you. This work may include facing something from your past, navigating a difficult life transition, gaining new awareness of repetitive cycles of behavior, or the opportunity to freely discover and playfully explore your own subjectivity and imagination. I also work with couples to improve their communication by identifying the ways in which they get stuck trying to resolve conflict, while also finding ways to achieve greater emotional intimacy. I have expertise in working with non-traditional relationship structures, including ethical non-monogamy, open relationships, and kink power exchanges. My areas of focus include depression, anxiety, career burnout, premarital counseling, artistic stress, trauma, bereavement, internet and porn addiction, and interpersonal difficulties. My approach is collaborative, active, warm, and transparent. Having worked as an actor previously, I am particularly aware of the impact of the body on our wellbeing, the nuances of the creative process, and the various (and often contradictory) roles we play in our relationships. Integrating this perspective in my practice has benefited my work with creatives and non-creatives alike. My practice is primarily psychodynamic; I begin with the assumption that people develop certain patterns of interacting with others in childhood, and that these patterns are repeated throughout life. I use the therapeutic relationship to help clarify these conscious and unconscious patterns of relating. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University, which has informed my understanding and approach to therapy. If you think we may be a good fit together, please schedule a consultation.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I earned my doctorate from Long Island University and completed my postdoctoral training at the William Alanson White Institute and Vienna Praxis. I completed my pre-doctoral training at Mount Sinai/Elmhurst Hospital. I have also held clinical positions at the The Family Health Center at NYU Langone, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), and the Long Island University Psychological Services Center. In these settings I worked with culturally diverse individuals across the lifespan. My clinical expertise includes working with anxiety, depression, trauma, bereavement, men’s issues, artistic stress, relationship issues, personality disorders, medical comorbidities, and interpersonal difficulties. I strive to maintain a culturally-informed framework and diverse practice, including individuals who identify as LGBTQIA and BIPOC.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After you make initial contact, we will schedule a brief 10-15 minute consultation call, during which time you can tell me more about your reasons for seeking therapy and ask any questions you may have about my services, including questions about insurance, fees, and sliding scale. If we decide that I seem like the right fit for your needs, we will proceed with scheduling the first therapy session.

In-network insurances

Dr. Alexander Seife is not in-network with any insurances

It’s common for mental health providers to be out-of-network. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network coverage, so you may get partially reimbursed. Learn more

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $300 for 45 minutes
Ongoing session: $300 for 45 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay

More information on payments and coverage

My fee is $275 per session for individuals and $350 per session for couples. However, I may be able to offer a sliding scale rate based on income and financial need, depending on the availability of my reduced rate spots. We can discuss these financial details during our initial consultation call. Most insurance plans have some kind of out-of-network coverage, which means that you may be able to receive substantial reimbursement for sessions that you pay for out of pocket. I highly encourage you to call your insurance company to inquire about your out-of-network benefits. If you do indeed have these benefits, I will provide you with a monthly "superbill", which is essentially an insurance-friendly invoice, that you can submit for reimbursement. As a former actor, I also understand the financial hardships associated with a career in the arts. I offer therapy at a reduced rate for actors, writers, performers, artists, and creatives who are not able to afford my full fee. If you think you think you may qualify, please feel free to schedule a consultation.

I saw Dr. Seife for couples therapy. He was very helpful in improving our communication style and giving us the tools to resolve our conflicts in a more productive and respectful manner. I highly recommend working with him.
I saw Alex consistently for about a year and a half and could not recommend him more. He is thoughtful, asks good questions, and overall helps guide you to learn more about yourself. He created an extremely safe space to open up and provided support during a time of transition in my life.
Alex is very practical and matter of fact. He tells you how it is and guides you to work through problems on your own. He doesn't think for you which I appreciate but instead is there for support. Thanks for all you've done Alex!
I saw Alex for online talk therapy for one year. He was thoughtful, warm, and very understanding. I enjoyed how he framed and internalized what I was shared with him. His attentive listening skills were on point. I highly recommend him.

As a young man who needed counseling in numerous areas of my life, Alex could not have done a better job. Aside from being very relatable, Alex’s ability to truly understand his patients is very special. If you’re looking for five star service and someone who will actually understand your issues/give you the tool kit to deal with them, Alex is your guy!
I was and am grateful for having worked with Alex for couple’s therapy. In what was a personally difficult and sensitive time, he was an impartial and good listener. He identified and explained patterns in our behaviors/reactions to help us better understand each other. I felt that he showed grace and was also direct when needed. He helped us move on from what felt like constant stalemates.
I worked with Dr. Seife during a period of significant change in my life. He provided a non-judgmental space for me to explore the hopes, fears, and disappointments that come with transition periods. I ended therapy with Dr. Seife feeling both more accepting of myself and more resilient, which are a credit to his skills as a therapist.
