Getting to know Dr. Aliza Septimus

I have over 20 years of psychotherapy experience working with children, teens, and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, and many other mental health problems. I have worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, and private practice. These diverse experiences have helped me connect with people from different backgrounds. I am a former Instructor of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and the former Assistant Clinical Director of the Adolescent Day Program at the Child and Family Institute of St. Lukes-Roosevelet Hospital. Also as a Supervising psychologist, I provide training and supervision to psychology interns. In addition to private work, I have worked as a staff psychologist at the Jewish Board of Family & Children's Services, an outpatient mental health clinic. I received my undergraduate degree from Stern College Yeshiva University and a Doctorate in Psychology from Pace University. I completed my post-doc training at the Child and Family Institute at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My Therapy Approach It's important that you feel comfortable, understood, and respected. I aim to create a warm, trusting relationship where you can speak freely about the reasons that brought you to therapy, and together we can develop a plan that aligns with your therapy goals. I believe that people are capable of major transformation and personal growth. There are often a few things that stand in the way of healing and progress. Sometimes, you don't possess the skills and tools to make that change happen. Other times, you are motivated to change, but people or things in your life are holding you back. In order to address what is keeping you stuck and in pain, we will dive deep into the nature and circumstances of your problems. You will gain more insight and begin to let go of unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving that are standing in your way. You will learn strategies and tools to help you cope better and make positive changes in your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Once you schedule a consultation intake appointment, you will receive an invitation to complete the intake forms. These forms enable you to share more information about your reasons for seeking treatment and what you hope to achieve in therapy. During the consultation appointment, you will get a better sense of what it’s like to work with me. I will answer all your questions, and together we will create a plan for our collaboration. We will also discuss the therapy style and approach that works best for you.
