Dr. Bruce Hillenberg, PhD

Psychologist
MI
Hi there, I'm Bruce! I am J. Bruce Hillenberg, PhD, ABPP. I earned my Bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, my Master's in Counseling from the University of West Florida, and my PhD from West Virginia University. I have practiced clinical psychology since 1984, specializing in stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, aging, and life transitions. My approach I guide clients to greater psychological flexibility. This means being free of the painful past, embracing the present moment with courage and gratitude, and being fearless in facing the future. I use guidelines from cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-commitment, mindfulness, humanistic/existential, emotion-focused, and psychodynamic models. I personalize treatment for each client, helping them move away from emotional pain toward wisdom and improved resilience. I follow a fellow-travelers model: I believe that a genuine and safe therapeutic relationship is the foundation of therapy. My focus I work best with clients who have a solid reason for entering therapy-those willing to face fears, practice patiently, develop self-compassion, and tolerate facing the truth about their life. My therapy most often addresses emotional and physical pain, stress, depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, and life transitions. My communication style Clients describe therapy with me as safe, honest, hopeful, emotional, sometimes humorous, difficult and rewarding, and life-changing. I believe in self-disclosure, empathy, genuineness, and hard work. My journey to mental healthcare I developed an interest in personal growth in the 1960s and found passion in genuine human relationships. Through therapy, I learned to effectively address my own fears and desires for meaning. Early on, I was hooked on being a therapist and realized this would be a wonderful way to make a living. My relationships with clients have been a source of meaningfulness to me. I am truly blessed to be a psychologist and therapist.
