Getting to know Dr. Bryce McDavitt

I am a psychoanalytically trained psychologist with twenty years of experience in research, teaching, and counseling (license #PSY28942). I provide depth-oriented psychotherapy to clients from all walks of life and specialize in helping LGBTQ people improve their self-esteem and relationships. Therapy with me is a collaborative partnership where we explore how your mind works and get to the root of your difficulties. Using insight-oriented methods, Jungian dream work, and close attention to emotions, I will help you develop the "mental muscle" that allows you to better understand yourself and find new paths forward. As you grow more aware of how your feelings arise, how your thoughts unfold, and how you create patterns in your life, you will become a more active participant in your inner life and destiny. After receiving my BA in Gay Studies magna cum laude from Pomona College, I obtained a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. I trained at the Los Angeles LGBT Center and Valley Community Counseling Clinic, and specialized in gay- and HIV-related research at AIDS Project Los Angeles. I stay current through ongoing study and research, as well as teaching in the USC Department of Psychiatry and Pacifica Graduate Institute’s clinical psychology PhD program.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide high quality psychotherapy that helps you get to the root of your difficulties and attain lasting insight, growth, and change. Most clients see me weekly, but some come more often, depending on the issues they are working on. There is only one way to really know if a therapist is right for you: talk with them and see how it feels. I invite you to schedule a consultation. In the first visit we work together to clarify what you want help with, and develop a preliminary understanding of what is causing the difficulties. Though it is just an initial encounter, I also try to give a sense of what therapy with me is like by actively offering feedback and insights that often begin to provide a bit of relief. You will leave with fresh perspectives to consider until the next visit, should you decide to continue.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

People often seek therapy when they feel stuck, like an eddy in a stream, swirling round and round in the same old patterns—not exactly lost, but not moving forward either. Therapy is a way of getting unstuck. No therapist can take away life's struggles, but a good therapist can help you rediscover joy, meaning, and fulfillment, help you free yourself from rigid patterns, allowing the springs of life to flow again. The therapy I offer unearths the roots of those old patterns, whether they show up as seemingly irrational fears, mysterious feelings of emptiness, or compulsive behaviors that lead to shame, worry, and regret. I help you discover new ways of being that work for you. Therapy with me is holistic, individualized, and focuses on getting beneath the surface.
