“Clarissa was great. She was patient and listened carefully and thoughtfully to my issues. She offered helpful insight but wasn't overbearing or too opinionated - I appreciated that she didn't think she knew everything about me from just one session! She was also very thorough in helping me understand the ins and outs of my insurance coverage which is super confusing. I will be coming back for weekly sessions. ”

Getting to know Dr. Clarissa Slesar

Dr Clarissa Slesar is a licensed clinical psychologist who maintains a private practice in SoHo. She sees individuals and couples ranging in age from late adolescence on and offers support for a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship and career problems, as well as more existential concerns. Dr Slesar believes that emotional and behavioral “problems” are attempts to protect oneself from psychological injury or trauma. Understanding how our self-sabotaging/self-destructive tendencies, anxiety, depression, “unhealthy” relationship patterns, etc., are strategies to cope with and prevent pain and suffering, is a crucial step towards feeling better. Grounded in over a decade of advanced education, training and research, it is Clarissa’s aim to act as a compassionate and empathic partner in clients’ effort to achieve success in and balance between these grand essentials: having something to do – meaningful work that engages us in positive and stimulating ways; adequate and healthy social support and emotional intimacy; and having a positive relationship with our own future, such that we can look toward what’s ahead with hope. Clarissa welcomes adolescent and adult individuals and couples of any gender, orientation, race, religion, etc. Her theoretical approach is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic and she incorporates technique and theory from other approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

So I thought that I was getting therapy for years, by seeing psychiatrists. In every 5 that I went to, I found 1 that remotely helped. The rest would either jump to prescribing or listen for endless hours before providing any insight. I got tired of explaining what's going on in my mind. Talking to Dr. Slesar was effortless. I actually barely spoke. Within minutes she was saying things that hit the nail on the head and left me wondering how she could possibly know what I was feeling/ thinking. She gave me tangible realistic things to do rather than speaking in theories. This was beyond refreshing. By far the best mind session that I have ever had. I say mind session because I realize now psychiatry is often not therapy. Commitments usually make me uneasy.... but I ended my session asking Dr. Slesar to commit to me once a week :). I give my highest recommendation!

Dr. Slesar was friendly, funny, engaging, and extremely supportive—all in my first session. I appreciated how down to earth and authentic she is as a professional, and there was no wait time. I’ve found my new therapist!
Not a great first impression. It wasn’t the right fit for us and she seemed very concerned about payment. Did not seem like she was genuinely interested in us and our issues.
Pretty great. Good listener, good memory.
Dr. Slesar is an extremely intelligent, caring, compassionate and down to earth therapist! I feel very comfortable with her as a supportive figure in my life and her office is very welcoming and comfortable. She speaks honestly and bluntly in her sessions and is skilled at explaining psychoanalytical interpretations in very digestible terms. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a warm, contemporary, thoughtful, and funny therapist to help you work through any issues life throws your way.
I have been seeing Clarissa for two years, with great satisfaction. She is open minded, sincere and caring; but most importantly, honest. What I value most is feeling comfortable and confident in my sessions in the sense that I can speak my mind and not hold back, knowing that I will be heard and responded to with my best interest in mind. Clarissa analyzes situations and puts scenarios into context in an objective but empathetic way; easing me, but also allowing me to leave with new thoughts and perspectives. This creates a space for me to do the work on my own. I have grown tremendously with the help of Clarissa, and inevitably her skill, which gives me the invaluable time to do the work on my own, knowing I have full support.
Clarissa Slesar is an excellent and kind therapist. I've been seeing her for a few months for an anxiety disorder, and I've felt a great improvement in my overall quality of life. I've found it easy to set up appointment with her, and she's always on time.
I have worked with numerous therapists over the course of my lifetime and I think Dr. Slesar was the best of them all. The reason I say this is she was able to point things out and help me look at challenging situations that i was going through with a very unique lens. I was able to resolve many issues that have plagued me for years and come to peace with those situations from our sessions. Dr. Slesar was always prompt on time for our appointments. I always found her to be very easy to talk to and I appreciated that she was a great listener and always truly was listening to me. Dr. Slesar would remember things we spoke about and often I would be surprised that when I told her even minor details about certain situations she would remember them months later. There were times when I would come in for a session, and she would mention that she had thought about what I said in our last session and offer another way to look at it. We would then revisit that situation and look at it in a different way. The fact that she was thinking about what we had spoken about in her free time meant so much to me. Dr. Slesar's office was very comfortable to be in, with a nice couch to feel relaxed, water for her patients and great air conditioning when it comes to those hot summer days. I would recommend Dr. Slesar to anyone I knew was looking for a therapist to talk to, and seek improvement in their lives. She truly changed my life for the better and I am so appreciative to have found her.
Dr. Slesar has been a major help to me over the past year. She is the first person I felt comfortable opening up to and really allowing to help me work through issues. The quality I enjoy most about her care is that we work together to understand my background and the root of my emotions. I am in a much better place today because of her. Highly recomnend!
Working with Clarissa has been tremendously beneficial for my wife and I. Her friendly and approachable demeanor makes you feel like you are talking to a Friend, not just being analyzed. She is fair humored, insightful, and highly competent. I would recommend her without reservations.
