Getting to know Dr. Darby Mortenson

Welcome. My name is Darby, and I am a psychologist at Bryant West Psychology offering individual and couples therapy for adolescents and adults. My clinical specialties include identity and family of origin concerns, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and relationship issues, including sexual trauma and violence within relationships. I believe our deepest wounds often occur in relationships that were limited, failed, or violated us, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Healing often occurs in the presence of safer relationships, such as the therapeutic relationship. Together, we will look at how early childhood relationships shaped your inner world, emotional reflexes, and the ways you relate to yourself and others. Therapy becomes a space to recover what was lost and reclaim your capacity for vulnerability, playfulness, desire, sadness, and anger; the full range of vital human emotions. I also incorporate existential themes into my work. This means we will explore not only your relationships and daily struggles but the larger questions that give life context, such as Who am I? What matters to me? How do I live knowing I will someday die? If spirituality or religion is central to your identity, we can explore how your beliefs shape your experience of self, others, and the world.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I earned my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Albizu University in Miami, Florida. My clinical experience spans residential treatment for eating disorders, inpatient and intensive outpatient care for adolescents with severe mental illness, and university counseling centers with a focus on group psychotherapy and sexual trauma. These experiences have shaped my ability to hold the full complexity of human experience with sensitivity, compassion, and culturally-informed care. Across all levels of care, I approach therapy in a trauma-informed and relationally attuned way, supporting clients as they navigate difficult emotions, relational challenges, and experiences of loss, violation, or uncertainty. My work is grounded in the belief that healing happens not in isolation, but through relationships that can safely mirror, contain, and support the growth of the self.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Whether you are facing long-standing emotional pain or navigating new life transitions, I want to acknowledge that choosing to come to therapy can feel difficult and vulnerable. My goal is to offer a space where you feel seen and supported even in the deepest, most unchartered corners of your inner world. In our work together, we may reflect on the patterns, emotions, and experiences that shape how you relate to yourself and others. We will also explore how these relational dynamics emerge in the context of the therapeutic relationship, which will operate as a holding space to understand and articulate old wounds while recognizing and appreciating your enduring strengths. I look forward to joining you exactly as you are, honoring the paths that brought you here, and supporting you as you step toward the life you are creating.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Ongoing session: $160-350 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork
  • Charges post-reimbursement amount: This provider will only charge you for the amount you pay after you get reimbursed from your insurance plan, so you don’t need to pay the session fee upfront

More information on payments and coverage

Bryant West Psychology works with most insurance plans (whether in-network or out-of-network) to make the financials easy, hassle-free, and paper-work-free for you. We can bill your insurance for you, and you can pay us any deductibles and co-pays by credit card or through Zelle, as well as the old-fashioned ways, such as check or cash. In-Network: Our clinicians are providers in the following networks: Aetna and its affiliated insurances (Allied Benefit Systems - Aetna, Christian Brothers Services - Aetna, Health Scope - Aetna, Meritain, Nippon, Trustmark ) and student health insurance at NYU, Columbia, New School, and Fordham. Your in-network insurance company sets our fees, co-pays, and deductibles, making our service more affordable. We will discuss this with you. Out-of-Network: We bill all insurance companies, such as United Health Care, Oxford, Cigna, Blue Cross/Shield, and Beacon (to name a few). Depending on your plan, your insurance may pay up to 80% of our fee (and sometimes more). We will do our best to work with you to make payment arrangements that won't break the bank—that is, your bank.
