My practice welcomes adults with a wide range of personal issues including depression, mood swings, anxiety, relationship issues, attention deficits, sleep problems, disordered eating, and substance abuse. If you choose to work with me, I will conduct a thorough initial evaluation, establish a diagnosis, and make treatment recommendations. Depending on your individual situation, I may suggest psychotherapy and/or medication treatment with me or another clinician. My patients come from the Greater Boston area, throughout the United States, and around the world. I trained at Harvard Medical School and am the author of Healing Psychiatry: Bridging the Science/Humanism Divide (published by the MIT Press).

Dr. Brendel really took the time to listen. He was thorough with his questions but maintained a conversational feel throughout the session; at no point did it feel like an interrogation. He gave me a range of options to consider for the concern I came to speak to him about (adult ADHD), and then helped me work through the best path forward for my specific situation. He also helped me recognize some factors that I hadn’t previously considered but were likely contributing to the issues I was experiencing. I would highly recommend Dr. Brendel.
I loved his experience & expertise. Worthy of applause & many thanks.
Great listener, really wish he'd of told me to shut up
Dr. Brendel has a rare breadth of knowledge and carefully evaluates his patients to determine treatment and medications.
I had an excellent experience with Dr. Brendel. He has a rare combination of kindness and knowledge. He is up to date with the most current information concerning illnesses and treatments. He also really listened to my thoughts on treatment options and what would be most appropriate for my lifestyle and situation. What was probably most important to me was the genuine understanding and compassion I received from him. At a time when I was feeling particularly vulnerable, I think that I found a Dr. that I can put my trust in. That is invaluable to me.
Ive been more comfortable talking to fiscriminatory police officers. Will interrogate you, treat you like youre "doctor shopping" if you happen to have treatment resistant depression that has only ever unfortunately responded to adderal. Lowered my dose because of my medications reputation and bullied me into accepting it, making my major depression symptoms worse. I am extremely exhausted by psychiatrists and have given up hope finding someone who isnt patronizing and dehumanizing - they do not exist. See him if you like being called by the wrong name and want to hate yourself even more for the absolute misfortune of suffering a mental illness you didnt chose in a society that deeply stigmatizes it. My entire family has never dealt with substance abuse and I am an exact product of that - I have never in my life been treated like a "drug addict" before meeting him. I cant remember how many times I explained how treatment resistant my personal depression ans PTSD are, how many things I have tried, and how what I am on is unfortunately the best combination after having begun trying medicatons from the age of 15. If you want to remember what its like to be in high school scolded by an abusive parent claiming you must be abusing drugs, enjoy.
Dr. Brendel is very friendly, approachable, and highly professional.
Very professional and created a very relaxed atmosphere. It was my first time seeing a DR in this type of situation and I will certainly be returning.
I am grateful for my time with Dr. Brendel. I felt like he really cared about what I was going through, empathetic about my struggles, and very proactively listened.
In the middle of a crisis like I've never experienced, the first 45 minutes I spent with Dr Brendel improved me a ton. He's continued to support me after, but when I felt my most hopeless, Dr Brendel was the only thing that was able to help me.
I'm very happy with the information I received
Dr. Brendel had such an approachable and warm demeanor, along with extraordinary professionalism. I am so grateful to have found him.
I recently completed an initial visit with Dr. Brendel. I have been to multiple psychiatrists, therapists and psychopharmacologists over the past 30 years for treatment resistant depression. Never have I felt as confident in a doctor's ability to treat my condition as I feel with this doctor. This is a huge step forward for me. I feel that Dr. Brendel will be able to help me and won't give up until he does. He is extremely professional, warm, kind and intelligent. He knows his stuff, to put it bluntly. It is very difficult to find a doctor in this field that combines all of these qualities..anyone who is dealing with depression, especially when it's treatment resistant, understands what I mean. I finally feel that there may be hope. That's amazing.
I met with Dr. Brendel for a consultation on other treatment that I had. His credentials validate the excellent assessment he provided to me. If I lived in the Boston, area I would continue to see him.
A phenomenal doctor. Attentive, thoughtful, and supportive. One of the best psychiatrists I have seen.
Attentive and compassionate. Took note of all considerations. Very luck to have had the chance to meet with him.
Excellent questions to bring out issues in a comfortable manner, and immediate plan to start dealing with them.
Extremely thorough easy to talk to. Made me confident that we can work together and make progress.

I have faith he can fix the mess with my meds that I came to him with. Very good first impression. Really nice guy.
Dr. Brendel and I instantly connected on a personal level and he was able to quickly hone in on my therapeutic and counseling needs. Despite the fact that I've only had a single visit, I believe that we'll have a strong working relationship as he offers a unique, multi-disciplinary treatment approach consisting of medication, talk therapy, as well as executive coaching and mentoring. It was a truly outstanding first office visit for me.
Excellent first visit! He is very caring and kind. A very good listener and gave great feedback,
Seems very professional, personable, knowledgable, patient, reasonable, and kind. I've only had one visit but based on that meeting I would recommend Dr. .Brendel.
Dr. Brendel is knowledgable, practical and very helpful. He also won't reccommend follow up visits if he doesn't feel it's needed. I definitely would recommend him.
This doctor charged a very large sum for an initial consultation. He saw me for 20 minutes only, made a hasty diagnosis and prescribed a powerful anti-depressant from which I had severe side effects. I didn't think he spent enough time to come up with a well thought through diagnosis before immediately writing a prescription with no clear treatment plan.
Dr Brendel was professional, prompt, and very helpful.
Dr. Brendel was excellent! He was kind, relatable, and extremely knowledgeable. His office is comfortable and he was very easy to talk to.
He was an enormous help to me. Personable, skillful, a fine listener, a thoughtful guy. I highly recommend him.
The care was excellent.
I was terrified to find a new Dr. and was skeptical, thankfully Dr. Brendel was wonderful. Compassionate, knowledgeable, plus a good sense of humor. I am thankful I was fortunate to find such a good Dr.
I enjoyed meeting Dr. Brendel and discussing some of my concerns with him. He was attentive and helpful. I would certainly recommend him.
