Deirdre’s goal is to help clients create deeper wells of safety, strength, and joy through non-judgmental understanding of themselves and their environments, and exploration of new patterns, experiences, and meanings to support them in changing, coping, and thriving. Deirdre approaches their work with clients with humility, respect, and a genuine desire to connect. She sees therapy as a way to help ourselves navigate the complex web of personal, social, and relational dynamics that shape our lives. These dynamics can be helpful and harmful, and are often interlocking and rooted in ways we have learned to keep ourselves safe and find our joy.
Deirdre uses an integrative therapeutic approach, and works to create a truly collaborative environment. Their work with clients is always rooted in being trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and identity-affirming, and in recognizing that clients are the experts of their own lives and experiences. Deirdre is committed to always developing her understanding of all identities and cultures, especially as they relate to oppression and liberation. She helps clients work within their current reality while cultivating hope, skills, and resources for the future.
Deirdre received her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from SUNY New Paltz, where she completed her internship at Astor Services Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program, working with teens and their families. They have also received a Masters in Higher Education Administration and Policy where they completed research on the supports for students with multiple marginalized identities with regard to race and ethnicity, socio-economic status, ability status, and sexuality and gender identity. They have an intimate understanding of the dynamics and stressors of a college environment and the systems within it. Deirdre has also worked as an advocate for clients who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. They are skilled in working with clients who have experienced trauma due to systemic oppression, family dynamics and intergenerational trauma, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, and other interpersonal and societal inequities. Deirdre is particularly experienced in working with LGBTQ+ clients and families, and has experience in facilitating training for clinicians and others in LGBTQ+ competency and affirming care.
