Getting to know Dulcie Abrahams Altass

As a psychotherapist driven by a passion to support people in their growth, my clinical focus is on addiction. I work well with individuals contemplating or currently in recovery, and those impacted by the addictions of loved ones. I believe that in therapy, we work together to connect with your most present, wise, and creative self. My own path has been defined by transdisciplinarity, migration, and collaboration. Originally from the United Kingdom, I have lived and worked in France and Senegal, and spent over a decade working in contemporary art before completing my MEd in Mental Health Counseling at Hunter College, NY. My clinical work has provided me with a strong grounding in working with individuals who have experienced trauma, addiction, identity challenges, and transitions, as well as serious mental illness and systems involvement. I have worked with clients at many different life stages and from diverse backgrounds, including in inpatient substance use disorder treatment, and settings for justice-impacted youth and formerly incarcerated women. I bring creativity and curiosity about people into our work together, and I look forward to joining you on your journey!

What should a new client know about working with you?

In our work you will experience deep and active listening, sincerity and humor from me, and a lack of judgment. Our sessions will be a safe space to both nurture your strengths and better understand and care for your vulnerabilities. In doing so, we will work together to support you in reaching your goals both inside and - most importantly - outside of the therapy office.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each person’s goals for therapy are different and the process of our work will be cultivated according to your needs and pace. At the heart of therapy however is always the therapeutic alliance, which is the foundation of trust and rapport which allows you to open up and grow. Therefore, to begin with we will explore your hopes for therapy and focus on building this alliance. If you’re struggling on a regular basis, we will work together to develop healthy coping skills that you can come to rely on when distressed. We will develop strategies for accommodating the discomfort of growth as you begin to make desired changes in your life. When you're ready, we will use psychodynamic and relational frameworks to guide us towards understanding your thoughts, feelings and behaviors and to shift unhelpful patterns that you wish to change.
