Psychiatrist
7 E 85th St, Gr B, New York, NY
ABOUT THE DOCTOR Douglas J. Van der Heide, M.D., is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst practicing on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University and completed his Psychiatry residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Payne Whitney Clinic. My interest is to help patients become curious about their issues and develop skills to undderstand their internal life more fully . EARLY INFLUENCE As a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, I have a very personal link to this field. My father was a physician and psychoanalyst himself, receiving his psychoanalytic training in Vienna with Sigmund Freud in the 1920s. It was the interest of Franz Alexander in psychosomatic medicine that made it possible for my father and his family to leave Europe on the eve of World War II to come to the U.S. to study. Psychoanalysis was my father's passion and profession; despite my initial ignorance of the significance of his work, I intuitively found it to be a matter of the deepest mystery. I am happy to say that the training I have received and my respect and love for psychoanalysis have never left me. It is the only form of therapy, in my view, that can offer a real second chance at life-to find the deep satisfaction and joy that a life well lived can offer.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am gentle and kind. I have learned enough about people to understand the pull between wanting to share with someone who can help and the feeling that doing that would risk potential pain or humiliation. It is my job to get you comfortable enough with me to feel safe and secure. Then and only then can we can begin the work,

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each session, unless specifically for medication, is 45 minutes in length. I usually wait for my patient to begin as it is their time and gives a chance for them to indicate the problem. While I hear the current issues, I consider contributions from the life history, the character style, the other issues in the patient's life including how they are with me. We discuss this and usually this gives us a way forward to deepen the conversation and find different perspectives and solutions.

Great bedside manner and asked probing questions to ubderstand my issues.
Verified patient
Pleasant experience in the beginning and was able to book through Zocdoc. He made me feel pretty comfortable during our sessions.. but when it came to paying and trying to use insurance he was very aggressive and honestly mean :(. I am new to NY and don’t have a regular doctor but needed a professional to prescribe me medication. I did not go to Dr. VdH for more than two sessions and was not seeking psychoanalysis but I will be finding another doctor in the future.
