Dr. Frank Wolkenberg, PhD

Psychologist
MD
I am a psychologist with expertise in neuropsychology who has been in practice for more than 20 years. Although I continue to do a small number of neuropsychological evaluations, my practice now primarily focuses on psychotherapy. My approach is eclectic, meaning that I try to meet people where they are; sometimes the problems are practical and immediate, sometimes general and longstanding. Most often, they are both. I did not begin my professional life as a psychologist, but pursued a number of career paths before going to graduate school. I think this has been helpful in understanding the day-to-day pressures that many of my clients face. My Ph.D. in Psychology is from Emory University; my internship was at the West Haven Veterans Administration. I am licensed in Maryland and offer video consultations. At different times, I have worked at the National Institute on Drug Abuse's Intramural Program/Brain Imaging Section, the Chesapeake ADHD Center of Maryland, and in nursing homes and a brain injury rehab, and have taught at the University of Maryland/Baltimore County and Loyola University of Maryland. I have been certified as an expert in Psychology and Neuropsychology by the United States District Court, MD, and in Maryland state and local courts, and have something of a specialty in assessing and treating health care providers and other professionals. I see clients for a variety of concerns like Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, and other issues.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Some problems are innate (who you are and how you are wired up by nature or nurture), others reflect what is happening in the environment. Most are some of both. Similar concerns often have very different origins and different best approaches . Rather than a "one size fits all" solution, my therapeutic approach is eclectic and multi-layered, and tries to meet you where you are to help you to get where you need to be.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I normally like to do a somewhat extended intake to attempt to understand what's going on, to set goals, and to see whether we will be a good fit. After that, we will probably see each other once a week in the beginning unless there is a reason to do things differently. Periodically, we will revisit our goals. You don't have to prepare material in advance, but you do need to show up.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Ongoing session: $180 for 50 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay

More information on payments and coverage

At this time I take Aetna, Hopkins EHP and US Families. Otherwise, this is an out-of-pocket expense that may be partially reimbursable by any insurance that you have, but the reimbursement process has to be administered by you. I am happy to provide a superbill for you to submit. I am willing to see people on a sliding scale if that is necessary, but please confirm that prior to our meeting.
