Getting to know Dr. Gary R. Brendel

*** If you are requesting an initial consultation, Dr. Brendel will personally contact you to gather basic information and to confirm the appointment time. Please note that Dr. Brendel is an out-of-network provider; if you have out-of-network insurance coverage, you may be able to get reimbursed. Dr. Gary R. Brendel is an extensively trained and experienced psychiatrist in full-time private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Since completing his psychiatry residency at The New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident, Dr. Brendel has maintained a hospital appointment as a teacher and supervisor to psychiatrists-in-training. Dr. Brendel has expertise in the use of both psychotherapy and medications to address his patients’ issues which often include depression, anxiety, anger management, interpersonal conflicts, unsatisfying relationships, stress related to work/career, low self-esteem, loss and grief. He treats adults throughout the life cycle. Dr. Brendel always begins his relationship with new patients with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment which takes into account the wide range of factors contributing to their distress (biological/genetic, psychological, emotional, interpersonal, cultural). In doing so, he is not simply conducting a medical evaluation that will help guide treatment choices, but just as importantly he is trying to immerse himself in the experiences of his patients so that he can begin to understand from within their own perspectives what they are struggling with. The types of treatments offered by Dr. Brendel range from infrequent, medication-based, and symptom-focused, to more frequent, in-depth psychotherapies that aim to help patients make lasting changes in themselves and/or in the structure of their lives. Dr. Brendel works in a supportive, non-judgmental, pragmatic, and collaborative way in which he and patients work together to find relief from symptoms and to build more meaningful lives.
