Getting to know Dr. Heather Sheets

Hello! Welcome to my therapy practice. Below is a little about me and how I believe therapy can work for you. There are certain transition points in life: moments when you identify a shift in your inner dialogue, recognize a need for lasting change, or decide it's time to choose which of your life experiences should be footnotes and which should be part of your greater narrative. I believe these are moments of opportunity-and together, we can use the discomfort caused by life changes, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, or other stressors to navigate the next portion of your life journey in a brave, healthy direction. Using emotion-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques, I help identify the relationship between your thoughts, feelings, and the choices that follow. I will work with you to embrace your true self and create a life that is authentic and emotionally fulfilling. In our work together, we will build healthy spaces in your mind by examining how your self-talk influences your experience of the world around you, unchecking the boxes others have assigned to you, and pressing start on a new, stronger version of yourself. I have been in clinical practice since 2001, with 16 years of experience as a licensed clinical psychologist in both public and private practice. I truly love my job as a clinical psychologist! I earned my Bachelor's degree from James Madison University, my Master's in Psychology and PsyD from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and completed a fellowship at Northwestern University. I look forward to learning more about you and your goals for change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note, I do not accept heath insurance. As a therapist, I work to create a environment for you to talk. I love this part of my job. I would love to offer you insight, feedback, counsel in all the ways that we see fit as we learn more about one another. I am a NO judgement therapist. I care about my clients not just getting better but seeing how their lives change and they thrive. Endings with clients are sad because I no longer have the incredible privilege of witnessing their life journeys. Ending are also much sweeter when a client doesn’t credit me with their identified personal changes but instead gives the credit rightfully to themselves. At the end of our work, I hope the identified strengths, skill sets, coping mechanisms, positive qualities, and personal characteristics they have at the end of therapy they now see were present all along. Present before they even met me.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please note, I DO NOT accept health insurance. You will be billed for all sessions. Our first session is used to help identify your therapy goals and provide you with information about how I work as a therapist. Simply put, I would love to listen to your story. It’s my favorite part of this profession. I want to know you and about all the things that have helped shape and have made you who you are today. The first session involves A LOT of questions! I want to learn all about you; why you are coming to therapy; what you enjoy about your life as well as what you want to change. By the end of the first session, together we develop goals you would like to accomplish in therapy. These goals will include thoughts, feelings, and maybe even physical experiences of anxiety and distress you want to change. I like to start ongoing sessions by hearing about your week, your life events, your stressors but also your positives. I truly believe in strength based therapy and while we will talk about what is bothering you; its essential to also talk about what is going well. In some sessions, we may set goals or tasks for you to work on during the week, its important that I follow up to see how that task or goal felt and what worked and didn't. Each session is also about having you leave with a plan to implement to change what you did not like about the previous week as well as space to feel, process, and share your experience.
