James Madero, LCP

Psychologist
CA
Hi there, I'm James! I am a California licensed clinical psychologist (PSY9558) with a PhD in Clinical Psychology from The Catholic University of America. I have considerable experience in private practice and as a professor of psychology and director of a doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have two daughters, the oldest of whom has a master’s degree in child education, and the youngest of whom is a licensed clinical psychologist. I grew up playing baseball and roller hockey in New York City, and ice hockey in San Diego. Among my great life passions are family, movies, and sports. My approach I have a collaborative therapeutic approach that involves establishing a relationship grounded in a safe, supportive, and caring environment where the client and I focus on identifying the client’s difficulties, establishing therapeutic goals, and working toward solutions. My goals for clients are to improve their quality of life and work toward greater emotional well-being. I utilize a variety of approaches and interventions tailored to the client’s needs, including Cognitive Behavioral Techniques, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and, in some instances, psychodynamic techniques. My focus I primarily work with adult clients experiencing depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, everyday relationship problems, and marital difficulties. I am most comfortable working with clients who have adequate contact with reality, good reality testing, sufficient motivation, no major substance abuse problems, and the desire to live an emotionally fulfilling life. My communication style My communication style is affiliative, aimed at establishing a relationship founded on collaboration, cooperation, and trust. The principle that guides me is one attributed to Walt Whitman: “Be curious, not judgmental.” I strive to be open-minded, engage in active listening without interrupting, maintain eye contact, and at times reflect back.
