I would rate my experience with this practice as extremely poor due to serious privacy concerns and a complete breakdown in basic professionalism.
From the moment I arrived, I was never actually seen by Dr. Fare because the check-in process. Instead of a private intake, I was directed into a crowded waiting room and told to interact with a customer service agent on a large screen, with the volume turned up so that everyone could hear. The agent asked me to say my full date of birth, home address, phone number, and the spelling of my first and last name out loud, and then requested scanned copies of my driver’s license and insurance card. The receptionist made no effort to provide privacy and explicitly asked me to speak this information in front of approximately 10 other people who were waiting. While some limited verbal confirmation at check-in is common, reasonable safeguards are expected to protect patient privacy in these situations, such as speaking quietly or using written or digital intake methods.
After sharing all of this information, I was told by the on-screen agent that I did not actually have an appointment and would need to come back another day, despite having a ZOCDOC confirmation and driving roughly 20 miles to get to this location. When I expressed concern about the lack of privacy, the agent admitted “this is not normal” but then dismissed it by saying, “it’s OK, you’ll be fine,” which only heightened my discomfort.
I left feeling that my time had been completely wasted and, more importantly, that my privacy and dignity as a patient had been treated as an afterthought. Given the unavailability of straightforward, HIPAA-conscious front-desk and kiosk practices that protect patient information, there is no excuse for a check-in process that requires patients to broadcast their personal details to an entire waiting room. I was genuinely mortified by this experience and would not recommend this practice to anyone concerned about their privacy.
