Getting to know Dr. Joseph Atanasio

Dr. Joe is a Clinical Psychologist in NYC. He works with individuals ages 12 and up and specializes in anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss, work stress, and mindfulness. He particularly enjoys working with young adults navigating major life transitions, such as graduating from college, entering the working world, or trying to find meaning in their lives. Dr. Joe spends time understanding his clients’ needs and goals before developing an individualized treatment plan. While he primarily utilizes mindfulness-based interventions, he also implements other modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential Therapy, Supportive Therapy, and psychoeducation. He frequently helps his clients develop mindfulness and meditation practices in addition to teaching deep breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, and other techniques they can use in their daily lives. His sessions are client-centered, focusing on the individual in front of him. His goals vary depending on the client. Some need help managing their depression on a day-to-day level, while others seek to transform their grief into something meaningful and learn how to move on while still honoring their loved one. Dr. Joe supports his clients however he can and is cognizant that everyone responds differently to treatment approaches. He is there to support them on their journey toward healing and growth. He received his PsyD in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and is licensed as a clinical psychologist in California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Vermont.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I would be honored to join you on your journey of becoming your best self. I strive to engage my clients with a nonjudgmental approach that facilitates building insight, personal meaning, and emotional management. I takes a mindful approach to life, incorporating Zen principles into therapy for a wide range of clients from 12 and up. I like to present myself in sessions as a human being first, that just also happens to be a clinical psychologist and an avid gamer. Therapy was meant to be experienced, and providing it through existential deep conversation and getting to know you as a unique individual out of the 7 billion+ people on this planet is an honor for me. In addition, therapeutic conversations about games, comics, anime, and just about anything Geek happens to be his specialty. I am a clinical supervisor and board advisor for Geek Therapeutics, an organization that promotes and teaches therapists, counselors, and mental-health advocates on how to integrate Geek subculture (such as Anime, Manga, Comics, Video Games, Tabletop Games) into their therapeutic practice. I have in-person practices in both Queens and Manhattan NYC where you may also come across his sweet therapy dog Ollie.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I first like to have a free 15 minute consultation by phone or zoom, so that you feel comfortable in getting to know me and can decide if myself or other therapists in my practice would be a good fit for working together. An intake is then scheduled and an invitation to our online portal will provide you some paperwork to fill out so that our initial session can be mostly getting into what you need to address in therapy, and less about background info collecting. Intakes last between 45min to 60 minutes, and if you feel that the therapy style is a good fit, we can book a consistent therapy spot. Sessions go for 40-45 minutes and are often directed by the client without any particular agenda by us. We are here to help your explore your goals needs, and not dictate how you should be or what you need to be doing. Therapy is a process, and it is collaborative. Therapy usually starts off as a weekly session, and might go down to bi-weekly depending on how you feel it is assisting you towards your therapeutic goals and needs.

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $250 for 60 minutes
Ongoing session: $180-220 for 45 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork

More information on payments and coverage

If you are in network, you will likely be responsible for a copay per session which we will inform you about. Before a copay, sometimes there is a deductible to reach, which is a full session cost based upon insurance contracts. Depending on your plan, we will inform you if you have a deductible to pay off first before insurance coverage starts. If you have insurance but we do not take it, sometimes plans have out-of-network benefits. We work with many major insurances to submit your claims for you if you do have out-of-network coverage which can pay for a large portion and percentage of our full session fee costs. If you do not want to use your insurance, do not have insurance, or do not have out-of-network benefits, we will discuss our full session fee costs and may offer limited sliding scale availability based on a number of factors. Therapy should be affordable and accessible, and we try our best to provide services to a diverse population.
