Qualifications and Experience
Kara Lichtman, MD is a licensed physician practicing adult psychiatry with an integrated approach that combines the latest in psychopharmacology with insights from psychodynamic theory. She treats the full range of psychiatric conditions including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, trauma related disorders, substance abuse, and ADHD. She enjoys working in collaboration with patients to identify the most effective treatments for each individual’s unique biochemistry and personality. She is available for consultations and ongoing medication management, as well as combined therapy and psychopharmacology. Dr. Lichtman’s goal in therapy is to assist patients with identifying and dissolving defenses, personality structures, and habits of thought and behavior that are no longer serving the individual. She believes in the adaptability of the mind and that we often develop dysfunctional patterns to serve us and carry us through times of trauma, stress, and loss. These experiences, along with genetics, may also lead to sensitivities of the nervous system that result in panic attacks, ruminative worrying, and somatic expressions of anxiety. Dr. Lichtman earned her BA from Yale University in literature and film and continues to draw from the arts and humanities to enhance her understanding of human emotions and relationships. She went on to study medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and completed her residency training at the Harvard Longwood Psych Center
