Getting to know Dr. Karen Apsel
I provide both talk therapy and EMDR. I work with individuals to identify maladaptive coping strategies and help gain insight into what is getting in your way. My goal is not to change a person's character but to put aside the defenses and shields that interfere with you and others seeing your best self. Often, people don't even realize the extra baggage they are carrying around until it is gone. They are just aware of being unhappy, depressed, anxious, irritable, or frustrated with their relationships.
I strongly believe it is important to find the right therapist for you. Using both the benefits of the therapeutic relationship and the value of an honest, unbiased observer, effective therapy can be far more than a chat with a friend or loved one.
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to support you on your journey toward healing and growth.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I actively engage with my clients to help resolve issues and figure out better coping strategies. If you are looking for a dynamic process, and not a therapist that just says, "uh huh," then I may be a good fit for you.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
First sessions of course involve sharing a history that led to what is going on for you now, but it's also important to focus on the here and now. I want you to feel like you are getting something out of the session, and not just telling me things that you already know. I have both in person and virtual sessions, and many clients move back and forth between, depending on what works best with their schedule.
