Getting to know Dr. Karen Axelrod
I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience. My work is broad, supporting individuals dealing with panic, worry, OCD, relationship and work issues, depression, and eating concerns. I also specialize in sexual abuse and trauma.
Providing a SAFE environment is KEY to successfully working with patients. Allowing them to feel free to be open and genuinely be themselves, without fear of judgment, is crucial to helping patients achieve success in their lives.
I am currently seeing most of my patients through telehealth.
Through insight and understanding, patients have the opportunity to achieve a greater sense of contentment in their lives.
I have many years of consulting experience in the New York City school system, working with children ages 6 through adolescence. I also work with parents on how to effectively manage children who have begun acting out at home or at school.
NEW MOTHERS:
I have a specialty that is often overlooked. New mothers, whose world has changed in many exciting yet challenging ways, often do not realize how difficult some of these changes may be. Occasionally, new mothers have nowhere to turn when they have lost hours of sleep, feel overwhelmed, and depressed. I have worked with many new mothers in individual therapy as well as small groups.
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from New York University. I completed my internship at St. Luke's Hospital and received additional training in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at New York University.

Says it's in-network on Zocdoc but turns out to be out of network. Either the provider is deceptive or Zocdoc is incompetent.

You shouldn’t list people as being in network for health insurance when they’re not.

Dr Axelrod doesn't take insurance so ZocDoc should update.

The provider is experienced, qualified and engaging. However, she is out of network and this is something that should be made clear on zocdoc or prior to appointment. I would recommend calling your insurance to confirm before seeing the provider.

I’ve seen Dr. Axelrod three times now. I feel quite comfortable with her and am confident that she will be able to help me. She is very thoughtful and her questions really make me think. In the time I’ve been working with her I’ve learned new ideas about myself and learned how to better cope with my anxiety.

I started seeing Dr. Axelrod around 3 months ago for depression and anxiety. My anxiety had gotten so debilitating that I was barely leaving the house. I was hesitant to go to therapy because of my negative experiences with other therapists.
I had concerns about the cost of therapy. However, I contacted my insurance company and was pleased to learn that they would cover the majority of the fees.
In the months I've been seeing Dr. Axelrod my anxiety has diminished and I am better able to live my life. From our first appointment I felt comfortable and had found a safe place. We have been able to identify some of my triggers and "warning signs" for anxiety attacks.
I look forward to continuing my work with Dr. Axelrod.

I had an awful experience with Karen. First, she was late to see me, then turns out she “neglected” to inform me that she was out-of-network even though making the appointment included my submitting my insurance information. Given that I was in a state of distress, I had no choice but to speak to her anyway. Then she made me pay via Venmo. She then went on to spend more than half the time I was painfully paying out of pocket to pitch to me about the benefits of out-of-network doctors! Not to mention that all this was happening in an untidy office with food remains everywhere.

Dr Axelrod instantly put me at ease, and helped me to open up, and to share my concerns with her. She was an excellent listener, and was able to share some keen insight with me, and to help me to see an even larger view of my issues, so that I can continue to address my concerns at a deeper level. It is obvious to me, the depth of her expertise and experience, but even greater, is her accessibility, and her calm and her care and concern for the issues that were discussed. I would highly recommend Dr Axelrod to everyone seeking a strong, dedicated, and supportive advocate and professional to assist them with the deepest issues that effect their lives. Hans S. I liked Dr. Axelrod fine. However, Zocdoc says she accepts Cigna insurance and when I got there she told me she actually doesn't! I had to pay for it out of pocket and get (partially) reimbursed. She did give me the option of canceling the appointment, but I chose to stay since I had already planned on being there. I can't continue with her since she doesn't take my insurance.

If I could give Dr. Axelrod 6 stars I would. I’ve been seeing Dr. Axelrod for close to two years, and can’t speak highly enough of her. I’ve worked with a few mental health specialists and found that she is the most patient, comforting, and contributive to my personal growth. Her office is quiet and provides a great escape from the nonstop noise and motion of Manhattan. She has never been late for an appointment, is always energetic and excited to talk, and is genuinely interested in my well-being.

This was my first time seeing a psychologist and I was a little weary, but Dr. Axelrod was able to put me at ease. Throughout our meeting, Dr. Axelrod guided me in a thoughtful and caring way. As a result of my positive response to our first session, I look forward to seeing her again.

Given how anxious I was, Dr. Axelrod was able to quickly put me at ease. She knew when to intervene and when to listen, creating a safe environment. And one where I felt immediately understood. Overall, Dr. Axelrod provided me with intelligent insights, yet allowed me sufficient room to express myself in ways that I had previously felt uncomfortable.

I immediately felt comfortable with her, and felt that she was extremely concerned about me and my situation. I sensed that she was really listening to me and had an uncanny way of cutting right to the core of what I was saying. I was very impressed by her insights which were right on target. I was able to really open up to her. I felt hopeless and desperate when I went to see her but her calm, attentive manner was comforting and encouraging.

Dr. Axelrod was kind, patient and very understanding. I thought this would be a one time visit because I had a very complex history, but I made several follow up appointments with her that day. If you're looking for someone who cares, she's it!
