Dr. McGillis is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who received her Doctorate in Psychology from National Louis University in 2003. Dr. McGillis fosters a collaborative relationship with her patients, seeing this as the most important agent of their change. She prides herself on being down-to-earth, relatable, nonjudgmental, and direct, creating a therapeutic environment that allows patients to feel and express themselves in whatever way they need to foster their growth. Over the last twenty years, Dr. McGillis has developed numerous areas of expertise. These specialties include helping adults process unresolved family dynamic issues and understand how these impact their current relationship struggles, healing from trauma, supporting survivors of narcissistic abuse in regaining their identity, aiding in understanding the effects of domestic violence, assisting those who struggle with substance abuse, and compassionately processing identity issues, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. Diagnostically, she has worked extensively with individuals suffering from depression, mood disorders, anxiety, and PTSD. On a personal level, Dr. McGillis has been married for almost two decades and is a mother to two teenage boys and a dog. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with family and friends, lifting weights, running, cooking, reading, and karaoke. At times, she may bring her personal experiences of juggling motherhood, work-life balance, nutrition, and fitness into sessions if it benefits her patients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. McGillis does not see patients on Mondays or conduct actual therapy sessions on this day. Booking an available appointment on Mondays is a brief consultation appointment ONLY. This appointment will allow you to determine if Dr. McGillis is a good fit in terms of the issues you hope to work on, your personalities, your comfortability with her, your ability to see her as an out-of-network provider (who will provide documentation for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement), and her weekly availability. You can expect this meeting to be free and about 15-20 minutes in duration.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During your brief Monday consultation with Dr. McGillis, you will decide if you are interested in scheduling ongoing therapy sessions. These sessions are typically scheduled weekly, but sometimes every-other week can be indicated depending on the issues you want to address and the severity of symptoms present. Your first actual therapy session with Dr. McGillis will be an intake assessment. During the intake session Dr. McGillis will explain policies and procedures and spend the majority of the session obtaining information about what brought you to therapy, what you hope to work on, your overall goals, and some historical/contextual information. Dr. McGillis has a very empathic, yet direct style that patients report appreciating.
