Getting to know Dr. Margaret Melaniphy

I have been in private practice as a licensed clinical psychologist since 2013. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at National Louis University. Before that, I completed my undergraduate degree in journalism at Northwestern University. I worked in magazine publishing for 10 years before returning to graduate school to study psychology. During that part of my career, I gained a wide range of professional experiences, including hiring and firing staff, managing a departmental budget, frequent business travel (and feeling its effects on my personal life), being laid off, and having to lay off others. I can absolutely relate to people who struggle to find meaning in their professional and personal lives. After the events of 9/11 and some difficult experiences that followed, I decided to go back to school because I wanted to do something that felt more personally meaningful. I love my work as a clinical psychologist. Over the years, I have developed a particular interest in working with people with anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, OCD, perfectionism anxiety, panic disorder, and trauma. This is a very anxious world we all live in, but anxiety and avoidance don’t have to dictate the choices you make in your life!

What should a new client know about working with you?

I transitioned to working exclusively online during the pandemic, when I moved to Minnesota. Prior to that, I had an office in downtown Chicago for ten years. I have found that teletherapy has been a great fit for my clients, most of whom are high-functioning professionals who appreciate the convenience of online sessions. I am fully licensed in Minnesota and Illinois. I also participate in PsyPact, which allows me to see clients in more than 40 states. I am not in-network for any health insurance plans. Sessions are $185 each, and payment is handled via credit card or HSA card. I will provide you with an emailed "superbill," which is the documentation you need if you are going to request out-of-network reimbursement from your health insurance plan. I am happy to help answer any questions about this process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to be highly collaborative with clients. I want us to work on understanding how you would want your life to look different if you didn't feel so limited by your anxiety. Then, we can start to uncover the worries and fears that feel like they get in the way of your progress, and develop coping strategies for those thoughts and feelings, so that you can move forward. I am an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) practitioner. ACT is a behavioral intervention to help people learn strategies to live life more in the present, more focused on important values and goals, and less focused on painful thoughts, feelings and experiences. ACT teaches people how to engage with and overcome painful thoughts and feelings through acceptance and mindfulness techniques, to develop self-compassion and flexibility, and to build life-enhancing patterns of behavior. ACT is not about overcoming pain or fighting emotions; it’s about embracing life and feeling everything it has to offer. It offers a way out of suffering by choosing to live a life based on what matters most.

Margie has done so much for me. She helps me make connections in my thoughts that I never would have realized. She has challenged me to grow and helped me along the way. I've referred multiple friends to her and they all rave about her too.
Good listening skills, helps to provide balance and insight on the broader situation. Would recommend and will continue to see.
Margie is very thoughtful. She has a knack for seeing a composite picture of challenges and using that information to talk about meaningful, realistic treatment.
Her compassion, versatility and all-around bedside manners are superb. She will make you feel comfortable within the first 15 minutes of your initial appointment.
    Verified patient
Margie is terrific. I've had trouble finding therapists I can connect with that also give advice in a constructive and manageable way. She's authentic and brings a degree of hope.

Dr Provenzano is nothing but a gem. She's an excellent listener, gives great feedback and action items to help you improve, and is inherently on your side. She genuinely wants the best for you and is doing the work because she cares and you can very much feel that in her sessions. I had to switch insurances or I would be going back forever!
    She is simply the best.
    Very attentive, sincere and insightful.

I have been seeing Dr. Margie for almost a year now, and I was so happy at how comfortable she made me feel right away. I had never seen anyone prior to her, but she definitely puts one at ease and is very thoughtful and patient. She has helped me immensely, providing new perspectives and things to focus on in my day to day. One session and it felt like a weight was lifted- have been going back ever since.
Thoughtful. Kind. Patient. Helped me get through some serious personal-struggles, enabling me to get my life back on track. I have recommended her to friends, and would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a very calm, kind approach to whatever you are going through.

Wonderfully calm and grounded bedside manner. Her ability to guide in a very subtle yet strong way is why I will keep returning to her!
Dr. P is really awesome. She is easy to talk to and gives you a toolkit of easy techniques to turn to when your mind starts to race. She's also not afraid to call you out if you're not acting in your own best interest, which I really value. I don't want to go to anyone else!! :)

I have been seeing Margie for over a year now, and she continues to be professional and excellent at her job. I could not recommend highly enough!
She was very helpful and easy to talk to even for my first time sitting down with her and never having been exposed to this. I was very nervous and intimidated leading up to the appointment, but as soon as I got in there and began talking that all started to fade away, and it truly had to do with her bed side manner. She was very calm and understanding and really helped me to develop some understanding just with in the first session.
Fantastic in every way, highly recommend!
    Verified patient
She's clearly a master of her craft and it seems to be a product of really listening to people and then being able to identify their motivations with a high degree of accuracy. This translates to an insight that then allows her to make poignant & practical suggestions that produce results.

This was my first time in therapy. I was extremely nervous and wasn't really sure how comfortable I'd be talking to a complete stranger but Margie made the experience very seamless and she was really nice. Knowledgeable and we even laughed a few times together. All in all, I'd highly recommend her to any new comers to therapy. And I can't wait for our next session. She sets goals for you that are easily attainable and I left my first appointment feeling great.
Very professional, was really great to talk to.

My visit with Dr. Provenzano was my first experience with a Psychologist. I was a tad nervous but she made me feel very comfortable. I will definitely go back and recommend her to anyone that's having issues!
    Verified patient
It had been a long time since I've been in therapy and being a grad student in the psych field, it was hard to admit that I really needed some help. Dr. Provenzano was really great and listened very attentively while I gave my background and even though mindfulness is something I don't use a lot in my own work I found it useful with her. I'm glad my first trip back into therapy was with her.
Really easy to talk to. Felt very comfortable even though it was my first visit. Gave me some good suggestions of little things to work on before next visit.l
Comforting, Warm, Professional. Also loved that she set some personal goals for me rather than just the standard listen and dismiss - which I've received in the past from previous therapists.
    Verified patient
Really enjoy her demeanor and approach. She gave me advice I felt like I could actually apply to my day to day life–no hokey overly-sentimental stuff. Just real life methods that really help.
