More about Martin Kounitz, LCSW

Angry? Feel stuck and overwhelmed in your career? Trouble sleeping? Relationship problems? Together, we will understand what causes your repetitive issues and how to overcome them. With over 20 years experience in corporate finance, I understand the stress you feel at work. My approach is that the most vital aspect of treatment is a strong working relationship. In a safe, nonjudgmental environment, we will explore conflicts and obstacles that block you from achieving satisfaction. We will work to end recurring pain to find a greater sense of well-being. I am an in-network provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield and Tricare, but work with other plans such as Aetna and CIGNA, among others, as an out-of-network provider. My specialties include evidence-based treatment of insomnia, sexual dysfunction and addiction. Many people also work with me to overcome anxiety and depression. Men and women seek treatment with me to understand what causes their depression and anxiety and how to overcome it. We explore conflicts outside your awareness to develop alternative perspectives, to clarify goals and to learn what obstacles block you from achieving satisfaction. Together, we work to end recurring habits and relationship conflicts to find a greater sense of control. My patients create meaning through self-discovery to manage stress better and to live fuller lives. Concerning treatment for sleep disorders, I use an evidence-based protocol called cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). The American College of Physicians suggests that CBT-I should be the first-line treatment for insomnia. In a six to eight week treatment, most people can significantly improve their sleep, whether falling asleep or maintaining sleep is the the problem.

He was very nice and very professional, and we developed a treatment plan that I think will help tremendously.
My visits with Mr. Kounitz have been insightful and have uncovered many obstacles I set before myself.
I've been seeing Marty for several months now, and he's just been so helpful. I highly recommend him!

Very relaxed atmosphere, easy to talk to and has very good advice.
Very aggressively money-grabbing personality. Avoid if you can.

Verified patient
Highly recommend for anyone struggling with persistent insomnia. I've struggled with sleep issues for a long time and have tried a lot of different approaches. Martin's approach equipped me with tools to deploy and I've seen remarkable - and sustained - improvements in my sleep, even while I've come off sleeping aids.

First visit, he was very friendly and warm. I felt very comfotable sharing my story and will definitely continue working with him.
This was my first time ever seeing a therapist and I found our sessions to be very helpful with the tough situations I was facing I am thankful that I was lucky enough to be Martin's patient, I never felt uncomfortable or rushed or like he wasn't listening and he helped me find my own solutions which I loved. I'd definitely recommend having a chat with of him.

I find this hour timeframe to talk very helpful in reevaluating and refocusing my life. It is good to slow down and talk through my ideas and thoughts. Martin is great in that he listens without judgment and is patient and easy to talk to.

Being that I've never been to a therapist of any sort before, I wasn't too sure of what to expect. Fortunately, Martin is extremely thoughtful and warm and provides not only insight to issues but also how to work towards a manageable solution. Would definitely recommend!
Martin is thoughtful and easy to talk to. This is important for me as someone who isn't comfortable talking about themselves in the first place.
Highly recommend Dr. Kounitz. He's emotionally intelligent and compassionate. He provides practical advice on working through problems without judgement.

Lovely guy and very compassionate.

I came to Marty after suffering from nearly 10 years of insomnia. I've gone to sleep doctors and sleep therapists, had pills pushed, and polysomnographies which all lacked in any meaningful results. After two months with Marty I've been sleeping every night with no need for any sleeping pills of any kind. I highly recommend Martin Kounitz for any sleep related therapies. His process is the ONLY process that worked for me.

Very patient and easy to communicate with. Pays attention to his patients. I never thought I could stick with talk therapy until my sessions with Dr. Kounitz.

First time seeing a therapist, and to be honest i'm not quite sure what to make of it. I expected more conversation, insight, and guidance, but it was quite the opposite. I thought there would be at least some feedback or exchange in dialogue, but i spoke 99.9% of the time- which isn't exactly what i was looking for. Why involve an expert when i can ponder my problems at home? That may just be how therapy is, but personally, i wanted to spend my time talking to a person, a professional, if you will, to provide some sort of experience or insight and i felt like i wasted my time. If that is just standard practice, it would have been nice to be asked as a courtesy if this is my first time, and it would have been great for there to be some sort of introduction that sets the expectations for our session. Personally, i also wished he guided the conversation more, maybe ask a few questions? It was a little uncomfortable. After all, isn't this supposed to be theraputic? Shouldn't there be insight and expertise? Why visit a professional if they're not going to say anything? I felt like the most vocal part of my 35 minute session was to talk about setting up recurring appointments and addressing insurance/payment. If this is supposed to be therapy, it may be right for others, but sadly it isn't right for me.
Dr Kounitz let me speak as much as I needed to and never once made me feel judged or uncomfortable... I am looking forward to learning some things about myself and he was enthusiastic about working towards that goal.

My therapist is very friendly and outgoing. He puts me at ease and makes me feel comfortable. Overall I would say my visits go quite well.
I am ecstatic, I have been plauged with insomnia for over 50 years. I came to M.K. because I was becoming dependent upon sleep meds & the worse thing is they were no longer effective. MK encouraged me to use a novel approach to conquering my sleep problems. Today 9(?) weeks later, my insomnia is gone! & I have thrown away all of my sleep aids! I still can't believe it!! Thanks!
