“My primary therapist strongly recommended Dr. Healy for couples counseling and my spouse indicated comfort with them, so we proceeded. Though I see our case as complex in several respects (intercultural, affected by lgbtq-specific issues, interracial, linguistic barriers), Dr. Healy has shown an ability to approach our sessions even handedly. They’ve shown a willingness to listen to concerns that have come up in the line of therapy, to look beyond the surface and to respect both my and my spouse’s needs for comfort and safety in the therapeutic environment. They have also been responsive to my initial requests that a balance be struck between accountability and taking sides. Dr. Healy seems to take the necessary time to get to the crux of things and to go at the pace that works for us. I recommend them for nuanced family issues that may require a professional who can approach treatment in a way that is culturally sensitive and trauma-informed as well as less complex circumstances.”

Getting to know Dr. CJ Healy

I work with adults, adolescents, and couples practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapy and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the New School for Social Research and currently work at The Flatiron Center for Psychotherapy. People often come to therapy feeling that there’s something about themselves that they don’t understand: why they struggle in relationships with friends, family, or romantic partners; why they have problems at work, at school, or in their sex lives; why their emotions feel confusing, unmanageable, or out of control; why they feel like they’re different from other people or like something is wrong with them. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy can be powerful ways to get in deeper touch with yourself and to transform your experience of yourself, your emotions, your relationships, and the world. I trained in both outpatient and inpatient settings and have worked with people across a wide range of age, gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic background, and level of symptom severity. I also specialize in working with the following populations: • LGBTQ+ people, particularly bisexual people and non-binary/genderqueer people • People who have childhood histories of maltreatment (emotional abuse/neglect, sexual abuse, and/or physical abuse/neglect), family dysfunction (such as domestic violence, alcohol/substance abuse, and/or high-conflict divorce), or other forms of complex trauma • Artists/creatives (including musicians, theatre/performance artists, dancers, writers, designers, and visual artists) • People who have used, plan to use, or have an interest in psychedelics

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is psychoanalytic, meaning we will work together to discover the ways your mind keeps you from knowing parts of yourself—feelings, memories, wishes, traumas, impulses, fears, desires—parts of you that often stem from childhood but continue to affect your present life. I will help you not only to get back in touch with those warded-off parts of you but also, or even moreso, to understand how and why your mind wards them off.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My style has been described as calm, welcoming, patient, and thoughtful. I believe healing and change come from allowing, accepting, and integrating all parts of ourselves, especially those that feel painful, shameful, frightening, or bad. Much of our process will be spent attending to what emerges between us in our therapeutic relationship as it develops over time and how our experiences of one another in the room together—conscious and unconscious—relate to the problems and patterns that brought you to therapy in the first place. In this way, we can see firsthand how you attempt to tackle these challenges and discover new ways to approach them based on greater understanding and self-acceptance.

I can’t recommend Dr. Healy enough. I’ve worked with other therapists over the course of my life and NEVER found what I would consider to be a good fit, that is, until I began working with Dr. Healy. Mustering up the courage to try therapy again wasn’t easy, but if I was going to, it felt imperative to work with someone with expertise in childhood trauma and neglect. There are far too few in the field with that specific expertise. I came to realize that was what was missing in all the other therapists with whom I worked. Trust me when I say this, it means everything for people with a neglect history. It’s not “one size fits all.” It was always so hard for me to open up with any other therapist because whenever I did I always regretted it. It’s so different with Dr. Healy who listens intently, asks the right questions and responds in ways that deepen the work. I am extremely grateful. I am also looking forward to our first KAP session in a couple of weeks.
