Getting to know Dr. Maurice Joseph
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, with a PsyD from George Washington University. I completed a fellowship at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and hold a Certificate in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy from the Washington School of Psychiatry. Additionally, I am a fellow of the Contemporary Freudian Society. My training and expertise encompass both short-term and long-term models of psychodynamic therapy, which I apply flexibly and integratively. As a generalist, I work with a wide range of life challenges but may be especially helpful to those suffering from OCD, health anxiety, conversion disorder or other mind-body disorders, and treatment-resistant depression and anxiety. What should a new client know about working with you?
In therapy we learn to listen to our symptoms and understand their meaning. We meet the parts of ourselves that need our help, and learn to better provide it. A therapeutic experience teaches us new ways to relate to ourselves and others, and this new learning can have a healing impact on the symptoms that brought us to therapy in the first place.
The problems that bring us to therapy often start as solutions to life's problems, our best efforts to get by in a difficult world. When these solutions stop working, and when depression and anxiety break through despite our efforts to cope, it is wise to seek help. Maybe today will start a journey of growth and learning for you. I'd be happy to help you.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
There is no typical session. I tailor my approach to you and your needs, so no two sessions will look alike. We will figure out what you need from yourself and from me as we go, and I will remain curious and open to your feedback about what helps and what does not.
I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation if you have additional questions prior to booking or prior to an initial session.
Two important things that have led to some confusion:
1) I am not in network with any insurance. I am an out of network provider and can provide receipts or superbills if you wish to access an out-of-network benefit from your insurance.
2) I am not a psychiatrist. If you are looking for someone to prescribe medication, you will need an M.D. or D.O. Thanks!

Initial session: $245 for 50 minutes
Ongoing session: $245 for 50 minutes
- Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
More information on payments and coverage
My practice is Out-Of-Network with Insurances. Payment is expected at the time of service. I provide superbill receipts on a monthly basis for those who wish to submit them to their insurance provider to use their out-of-network reimbursement benefit.
I charge the full fee for all missed appointments and
cancellations. You are allowed to cancel sessions without being charged as long as you provide
48-hour notice or are able to reschedule during that same work week.
I can offer a sliding scale based on need upon request.
