“I worked with Dr. Max for a year, a few years ago. I want to share a review now, as his value is still coming into focus. Two things make him great: first, he is a safe space for expression. I never felt I had to pretend to be anything around him, and I now see the value of that safety. Second, he taught me how to guide myself to better reflections when I'm walking around in everyday life. He's a really great doctor, and I always felt like he cared about me. He's 100% worth what you can work him on, and then some. Highly recommend!”

Getting to know Dr. Max Nisenbaum

I’m a psychologist who practices primarily from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches. Psychotherapy is a method of personal change and self-discovery through conversation. It’s unlike most conversations we have in our day-to-day lives because no topic is off limits. The areas we explore include your relationships, sexuality, dreams, fantasies, anger, anxieties, and the unconscious motivations behind your decisions. An important aspect of my approach involves an “interpersonal focus.” This means paying close attention to and examining the role that relationships play in your life. We explore how patterns of feeling and behaving in relationships impact your connections with friends, romantic partners, family, coworkers, and other important people. Another emphasis of my work is on unconscious processes that interfere with well-being. These processes might take the form of “defense mechanisms” that buffer overwhelming or unacceptable emotions. While often healthy and adaptive, these defenses sometimes cause more harm than good. Psychotherapy is a process of detecting counterproductive defenses and replacing them with more useful ones. I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston and completed additional training at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Max is a great psychologist who has helped me grow as a person and get through difficult periods in my life. I highly recommend Max.
Dr. Nisenbaum is an excellent psychotherapist. I found him to be caring, warm, supportive, skilled, empathic and highly professional. I strongly recommend him without hesitation.
Max is an excellent clinician and therapist. He is an excellent listener, non-judgmental and "meets you where you are." He is intelligent, knowledgeable and open to feedback to help you on your healing journey. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a competent and compassionate therapist.
I have been working with Dr. Max for a couple of years now. I can't express how grateful I am for the help he has given me. He has created a safe and caring space to discuss my issues. I leave our sessions feeling more ready to confront and deal with the things I have been going through. He is a very good listener and incredibly knowledgable. He is a true master of his craft. On top of all that, he's very flexible and understanding with scheduling. I strongly recommend meeting with him. For me at least, I can confidently say that my life is much better for having worked with him.
Max is an exceptional therapist who i worked with for multiple years. He is very considerate in all ways and his empathetic approach has been instrumental in my personal growth and mental well-being. I'm grateful for his expertise and genuine commitment to helping people. I believe Max cares deeply about his patients. Highly recommended for anyone seeking effective therapy and support.
Max is a fantastic therapist, especially if you're interested in the option of doing therapy sessions through Zoom or phone calls. I found that, eventually, I was driving almost all of the sessions we had; I strongly recommend him if you're looking for a male therapist and you're *not* looking for someone to railroad every therapy session—if you can see yourself volunteering what's currently on your mind, given some space to. Or at least, that's the dynamic I found we settled into.
Dr. Max is an excellent therapist. He has a calming and steady presence, combined with a dry sense of humor just when it is needed. Dr. Max has really helped me to work through some challenging situations and to introduce positive changes in my life. I highly recommend Dr. Max.
Max is kind, patient, and thoughtful. He is always present and focused in both 1:1 and group sessions. He has a knack for remembering details in a way that shows he really pays attention. He is direct without being confrontational, and I felt that he was genuinely interested and invested in my emotional wellbeing.
Max is an attentive, genuine, and kind therapist with a dry sense of humor I could appreciate. He did an excellent job introducing and guiding me through my first experience with psychotherapy. Max was invaluable to my personal progress in therapy, and I am very grateful to have worked with him. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking psychotherapy.
I highly recommend Max on Zocdoc and already recommend Max to all my friends! It was very easy to schedule my first appointment with Max and continue to work with him once per week for 1.5 years even though he was an out-of-network provider for me. He also had a very different approach to talk therapy compared to my prior three therapists that made me push myself and grow more and in the end, feel better and less anxious. We were able to identify goals and reach them in the end. We were able to try creative ways to hold myself accountable. We were able to focus on identifying specific emotions instead of keeping feelings surface level and vague. For all these reasons, I give Max 5 out of 5 stars.
I have being individual psychotherapy with Max since 2016, and he has been a solid resource and very helpful in learning to deal with my anxieties and perceptions in the world. I heartily recommend Max as a psychotherapist.
