What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that empathy, trust, understanding, and experience are the hallmarks of providing helpful therapy. I have been described and empathic and supportive, while also being able to challenge and provide an atmosphere for change and growth. I use a variety of therapeutic models, techniques, and approaches in my practice. The nature of the therapy depends largely on the individual's needs, goals, and preferences for particular types of treatment. My background is psychodynamic, but over the years I have incorporated several other methods of therapy that include CBT, Imago Therapy, exploratory psychotherapy, and supportive psychotherapy. I also supervise students and other clinicians in their work, and am certified to provide supervision to master's and doctoral level psychologists. This may be simply for consultation of for the provision of required supervision for licensure in the state of Florida. First and foremost, I believe that honesty and collaboration between therapist and patient/client are essential for creating an environment that is trusting, supportive and empowering.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Individual sessions are generally weekly and typically 45-minutes long. Some individuals elect to have longer sessions or more than one session per week. Couples' and relationship therapy sessions are generally 60-minutes long and occur weekly. Therapy patients/clients are encouraged to discuss their concerns, areas of difficulty, or symptoms in a save environment. This occurs as trust develops between patients/clients and myself. I listen carefully, and help people identify recurrent themes and problem areas for themselves or in their relationships. Exploration is offered of alternative coping and communication strategies. Support is offered for branching out and changing old patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that are not working for them. My goal is to help individuals grow into more fulfilling and rewarding ways of living life. This is, in all cases, a collaborative effort between my patients/clients and myself.
