Getting to know Dr. Michael Ivanov
I mainly specialize in relationship problems. I help people navigate through challenging issues with their partners via couples therapy or individual counseling. Whether you are dealing with misunderstandings or going through a painful breakup, I will help you overcome emotional distress and I will guide you to a better place regardless of the relationship outcome.
I am a New York licensed psychologist and director of NYC Psychological Services, PLLC. I have 20 years of experience in universities and inpatient and outpatient clinics. I particularly specialize in couples therapy. I also specialize in the evidence-based treatment of various mood-related conditions. I help clients with the regulation of emotions, stress, and difficulties in relationships.
Education
I completed my doctorate (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology at California School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco. Previously, I obtained Master’s Degree (M.S.) in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University.
Advanced Clinical Training
I have attended diverse seminars on psychoanalytic theory and therapy at San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute for over 5 years. My major focus was Psychoanalytic Couples Therapy. I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT), and family therapy. I try to find the best theoretical approach to fit each client’s specific needs and goals (vs. applying one theory to fit all the clients and every situation).
Research
I am a principal investigator of the study on Perceptual Agreement: Assessing Reality & Illusion in Romantic Relationships as well as the research on Behavioral Communication. I presented at numerous national and international conferences on topics of individual differences, personality traits, and relationship assessments. I develop assessment tools for personality and relationship traits.

My regular fee is $200 per 45-minute session and $260 for 60-minute session (e.g., for couples). I am Out-of-Network Provider. If you have out-of-network benefits and wish to submit reimbursement claim to your insurance company, I’ll provide you with a monthly statement (i.e., “superbill”), but NOT for BCBS and Cigna.

I want to thank Michael (Dr. Ivanov) for couples therapy and for saving my marriage. He helped me and my partner acknowledge and talk about our difference without shaming and hurting each other. We still have occasional fights but they aren’t too painful. We feel more love and connection now and we care about each other more than we care to be right all the time.

I’ve been struggling with anxiety for as long as I can remember. Dr. Ivanov was my 3rd therapist. He met me where I was. It took me some time to improve. I’m not entirely over with my anxiety but I no longer take pills and I don’t stress out so easily.
