“My experience with Dr. Stevens was great. Having been in therapy before I was expecting that resolving some of my issues was going to take a long time. After just 2 sessions, she zeroed in on the root issue. I feel that I have improved greatly in just a few weeks and will now see her as needed. I would absolutely recommend to a friend.”

Getting to know Dr. Michelle Stevens Sanagustin

I have been helping people heal, learn, and grow for more than 20 years. I am a psychotherapist, coach, teacher, and author of the best-selling book, Scared Selfless, which explores the aftereffects of child abuse and how to heal from it. My greatest gift as a therapist is my well-founded optimism. I know that no matter how bad things may currently seem, my clients can overcome obstacles, process pain, and move on to happier, healthier, more purposeful lives. I believe that all people have an innate capacity to grow into their authentic selves; they simply need the right conditions. I pride myself on offering clients an experience that is validating, accepting, nurturing, and supportive. I have particular expertise in childhood trauma, PTSD, and dissociative disorders. My writing on psychological trauma has appeared in such periodicals as the New York Times, Time, People, Good Housekeeping, The Huffington Post, and Psychology Today, and I have been featured on Dr. Phil, The Dr. Oz Show, and People magazine.  I'm a therapist with Octave and Evernorth Behavioral Care Group. Octave is a mental health practice providing high-quality care covered by multiple insurances. Evernorth Behavioral Care Group is a behavioral health provider group in-network with Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth Behavioral Health. For my availability, please see my calendar and book an appointment with me via ZocDoc.

OMG, I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Stevens! I feel like she's totally changing my life! In the past, I've been to therapists a few times but no one really stuck out. Dr. Stevens is AMAZING! My bf and I got in a fight and I was really upset. Dr. Stevens understood and moved her schedule around so I could see her the SAME DAY. The fight was so fresh that I was kind of inarticulate at our first appointment. But I swear to God, she's a MIND READER. She's not the typical "uh-huh," nod a few times type of therapist. She listens, but then interacts, asks questions, makes you think. I've learned more about myself, my relationship and really people in general in a few weeks than I ever thought possible. I feel like my anxiety is way down and my mood is way up. I am really, really greatful to her. Thanks, doc!
I decided to seek treatment for issues I was having with anger and being very easily triggered. Dr Stevens worked with me to help understand that I need to more skillfully control the expressions of my feelings, and to allow me to feel heard before I got upset. We are continuing to work on how to achieve these goals, but I am very pleased with our progress so far. Dr. Stevens has a great deal of patience, and her style is very kind and accepting and she offers suggestions that are very helpful. I would say that she has been very helpful, and I would recommend her to anyone who is considering getting help.
Dr. Stevens is the best there is and I'm so grateful I found her. She very quickly helped me get to the root of some issues and brought immediate relief and clarity. She is empathetic and caring with a great sense of humor. We took a very practical approach that has made my life much better!
I cannot recommend Michelle more highly. She is truly a find. I'd been to several therapists and could never find anyone who did much more than just listen. Or at least pretend to listen. That's not what Michelle does at all. She engages you directly and insightfully. Michelle not only understands what I'm going through (and often what I'm about to go through!), she suggests what I should do about it. As a film professional, I find her understanding of what we go through in the entertainment business particularly helpful. When I came to her I was stuck in a bad job with a worse boss. She helped me find the confidence to overcome my self doubts and strike out on my own in the industry. She has truly been a Godsend!
