Getting to know Dr. Paul Matkovic

Properly conducted therapy can completely change a person's life for the better; it might be the most important thing you ever do! I help people experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship problems, sexual issues, sadness, anger, fears of failure, or when things in your life aren't going the way you want. The goal of treatment is to help you live life to your full potential. I hold a PsyD from George Washington University, which has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to support you effectively on your journey to well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

During the sessions you are encouraged to speak freely about what is on your mind. This allows me to get a window into your thinking process. In the beginning I listen and ask questions. I have been trained to identify the sources of the symptoms which have brought you into treatment. Soon into the process, I make some observations about conflicts you might be only partially or sometimes completely unaware of. The purpose is not to give advice or to pass judgment, but to analyze, understand and heal. The mind is constantly in conflict with our wishes and the prohibitions on those urges placed on us by our parents and society. When these conflicts are resolved in an adaptive way, a person is able to lead a productive, happy life with a minimal amount of anxiety, sadness or self punishment. When these conflicts become maladaptive they manifest in the form of symptoms, which lead people to seek treatment. It is up to the therapist to detect the conflicts and bring them to the patient’s awareness, which happens gradually over time.

My 10 year old son was recommended for therapy by the school counselor. He likes working with Dr. Matkovic and looks forward to the therapy sessions. I think the therapy has been helpful. I notice a difference at home and the teachers say he is doing better in school. He now gets along much better with the other kids in his class, which I am very glad to see.
Dr. Matkovic helped me a great deal with my anxiety problem. I was skeptical at first but the therapy really works. Dr. Matkovic is professional; sessions always start and stop at the scheduled times - I recommend without reservation.
After a second painful breakup in three years. I decided it was time to start therapy. I was nervous at first and didn't know what to expect. It took a little while to see the benefits of the treatment. Dr. Matkovic is nice and listened to everything I had to say. At first he mostly asked questions. Later on he started offering some ideas which I had not thought of before and found useful. The therapy works, just dint expect it to work in the first three or four visits.
I had been in therapy before because of my depression. It was a lot different with Dr. Matkovic. Before, I was supposed to do "Homework Assignments" as part of cognitive behavioral therapy. I stopped because I wasn't sure how much it was actually helping. Dr. Matkovic does things differently. He works with whatever you bring to the session. It just fits my personality better to do therapy this way, rather than to be told to "will" myself out of feeling bad.
